My daughter,<\/strong><\/span> Lucy, is a corporate event planner in Chicago.\u00a0 She has done work for the president, Oprah, McDonald\u2019s, Coke and Target.\u00a0 She has worked gigs from Turkey to Australia.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019m not allowed to say all this.\u00a0 (I\u2019ll clear it with her.)\u00a0 She said to me, \u201cWe\u2019re doing something [in Chicago] for Topshop.\u00a0 Do you know what that is, Dad?\u00a0\u00a0 It’s a women’s fashion store from London.\u00a0 They want to bring in their own fashion-show coordinators from New York.\u00a0 They don\u2019t trust Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chicago is fourth — behind New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco — in American coolness, Lucy<\/a> said.\u00a0 \u201cThey think we\u2019re hicks.\u201d<\/p>\n

What do Londoners think of Cleveland?\u00a0 Do they think it\u2019s in northern England?\u00a0 I think Cleveland is in northern England.\u00a0 [Yes, it\u2019s a county near Scotland.]<\/p>\n

Cleveland,<\/strong><\/span> Tennessee.\u00a0 Magic Chef makes stoves there.<\/p>\n

Boston.\u00a0 That was a cool town once.\u00a0 In the early 1970s,\u00a0 young people headed to Boston. \u00a0The town was popular because, for one thing, it had James Taylor . . .\u00a0 \u201c[The turnpike was covered] from Stockbridge to Boston.\u201d\u00a0 The Ohio Turnpike was covered from Youngstown to Toledo, but nobody noticed that.<\/p>\n

New York wasn\u2019t that popular in the 1970s.\u00a0 Chicago wasn\u2019t either.<\/p>\n

These days<\/strong><\/span> Chicago attracts young people from all over Big Ten country.\u00a0 Whenever I meet baby-boomers in Cleveland, I assume their kids are in Chicago unless told otherwise.<\/p>\n

I like Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep Austin weird.\u201d\u00a0 That’s so lame.<\/p>\n

I would like at least one of my three adult children to move back to Cleveland.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not twisting my kids\u2019 arms.\u00a0 Cleveland ain\u2019t happening, at least not like the Big Four (Chi, LA, SF and NY).<\/p>\n

The Big Four<\/strong><\/span> gets old when you get old, kids.<\/p>\n

Which city is number five?\u00a0 Minnie?\u00a0 Seattle?\u00a0 DC?\u00a0 Cleveland?<\/p>\n

<\/big><\/big>My challah<\/strong><\/span> purveyor is On the Rise Bakery in Cleveland Heights.\u00a0 I know the owner and some of the help.<\/p>\n

I went there to put up a poster for a klezmer concert:<\/p>\n

The cashier<\/strong><\/span> said, \u201cWe don\u2019t do religious events.\u201d<\/p>\n

What?<\/p>\n

I stammered, \u201cIt\u2019s not religious. It\u2019s the Workmen\u2019s Circle. It\u2019s secular. It\u2019s bluegrass and klezmer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wonder if the owner is against religion. I\u2019ll have to ask him. I don\u2019t think he is. He\u2019s Jewish. I get along with him. The cashier said, \u201cI\u2019ll have to run it by the owner.\u201d<\/p>\n

I went<\/strong><\/span> back a week later, and the poster was up.<\/p>\n

What if the poster hadn’t been up? I would have had to move my challah biz to another bakery — one with\u00a0 \u201creligious\u201d flyers.<\/p>\n

Thank God, the poster was up, because I really like On the Rise.<\/p>\n
