{"id":645,"date":"2009-08-05T08:00:06","date_gmt":"2009-08-05T12:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=645"},"modified":"2012-03-26T17:27:07","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T21:27:07","slug":"klezbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/05\/klezbook\/","title":{"rendered":"KLEZBOOK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">I don&#8217;t need no stinkin&#8217; Facebook.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A suburban councilman\u2014who had been in my high school physics class \u2014 introduced my band at a summer gazebo concert. \u00a0\u00a0I hadn&#8217;t seen him in years.\u00a0 He had talked a lot in Physics.\u00a0 I told the audience that.<\/p>\n<p>At a gig in Rockford, Ill., a kid who used to do odd things in my bathroom (junior high), showed up. \u00a0He was a banker.<\/p>\n<p>In Dallas, the star of my junior high&#8217;s football team stopped by.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t know much about klezmer. \u00a0He was the\u00a0oldest of eight children of a Polish milkman. \u00a0 Sealtest. \u00a0I used to tutor my friend in math for the fun of it. \u00a0I concocted tests and flunked him. Years later he wound up getting into medical school.\u00a0 Showed me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>When Yiddishe Cup played in <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">New York,<\/span><\/span> my other high school buddies \u2014 the ones who used to sing &#8220;We&#8217;re Outta Here (Midwest)&#8221; \u2014 showed up at the gig.\u00a0 Back in eleventh grade these guys had worn buttons from a Greenwich Village shop: <em>I&#8217;m a Plainclothes Hippie <\/em>and<em> Unbutton<\/em>.<em> <\/em> Go East, young men.\u00a0 They did \u2014 about a minute after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At a Cleveland luncheon, a waitress,<\/span><strong> <\/strong><\/span>who had been in my fourth-grade class, reminded me we had the same exact birthday, different hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>I sometimes put these folks to work\u00a0 at Yiddishe Cup gigs.\u00a0 Particularly if \u00a0I&#8217;ve gotten them comp tickets to a concert.\u00a0 They sell CDs for me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>One gig \u2014 down in Florida \u2014<\/strong><\/span> I had a Palm Beach lawyer and a bee expert hustling CDs.\u00a0 The bee professor had played in a jug band in high school.\u00a0 Washboard or jug?\u00a0 Something stupid. \u00a0The Palm   Beach lawyer had played in the jug band too.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t invited into that jug band.\u00a0 I was relegated to playing dippy Al Hirt &#8220;Java&#8221; duets with the trumpet player across the street.<\/p>\n<p>Now these jug band guys were selling CDs for me.\u00a0 And they were good at it.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">&#8212;-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">1 of 2 posts for 8\/5\/09.\u00a0 Please see the post below too.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">&#8212;-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">Yiddishe Cup concert 6 p.m. tonight, Wade Oval, University Circle, Cleveland, Ohio.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t need no stinkin&#8217; Facebook.
