My friend rents houses in the Heights to medical residents, Case Western Reserve PhD candidates, and Cleveland Institute of Music students.\u00a0 These people want to live near University Circle. They’re high achievers with no time, or inclination, to trash an apartment.<\/p>\n
Has my buddy ever rented to a stripper?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 What about a stripper who uses crack? Doubt it. \u00a0\u00a0How about a stripper who cracks a whip while using crack?<\/p>\n
The West Side, where my properties are, <\/strong><\/span>is a little dicier than the ivory towers of the Heights. \u00a0\u00a0Or can be \u2014 particularly if the landlord is lazy and plays the “show me the money and you’re in” game.<\/p>\n My company screens tenants big-time.\u00a0 (OK, we did let the stripper in.\u00a0 Make that exotic dancer<\/em>.\u00a0 Exotic dancer with child.\u00a0 Pure innocence.)\u00a0 We do criminal and civil court checks. Credit checks.\u00a0 Previous landlord.<\/p>\n That’s called Keeping Up the Neighborhood. <\/strong><\/span> Sounds middle-class. True that.<\/p>\n We’re making a significant civic contribution \u2014 offering people a decent place to live in a decent neighborhood.\u00a0 That’s probably a bigger civic contribution than what my band does. \u00a0In a nutshell, my plumbers and custodians keep up appearances.\u00a0 Every day they create an art installation called Decent Neighborhood.<\/p>\n Is this art? The Webb building, Detroit Avenue at Webb Road. <\/p><\/div>\n Take the Webb building. <\/strong><\/span>It has a mother hen, concerned manager; Lebanese mini-mart guy on the ground floor; Korean dry cleaner; small-town Ohio Suzuki violin teacher upstairs; a Continental Express flight attendant, a truck driver, a welder, etc.<\/p>\n Some of these Webb tenants marry each other.\u00a0 (That’s bad for business.\u00a0 They move in together and I have an empty.)
