{"id":343,"date":"2009-06-19T07:00:33","date_gmt":"2009-06-19T11:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=343"},"modified":"2012-03-31T17:19:06","modified_gmt":"2012-03-31T21:19:06","slug":"the-yiddishe-cup-method","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/19\/the-yiddishe-cup-method\/","title":{"rendered":"THE YIDDISHE CUP METHOD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>I&#8217;ve sent out two versions of Yiddishe Cup<\/strong><\/span> on a single night.\u00a0 Not often.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hardly worth the logistical contortions: Yiddishe Cup does mitosis.\u00a0 I name the groups the A Band and the B Band.<\/p>\n<p>Probably should go with the red unit and blue unit, like Ringling Bros. and Barnum &amp; Bailey does, so there are no bruised egos.\u00a0 I&#8217;m fortunate, I \u00a0always wind up in the A band.<\/p>\n<p>I tell my customers up front what the story is.\u00a0 I say, &#8220;We&#8217;re \u00a0booked but if you really want us I might be able to pull it off.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0Then I try to steer them to another band, but if they keep insisting, I&#8217;ll do the B Band routine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>I didn&#8217;t try the A and \u00a0B band maneuver<\/strong><\/span> until I was 15 years into the biz and had a full stable of subs who knew the Yiddishe Cup Method.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat:\u00a0 Don&#8217;t play the A\/B game without being very experienced and upfront.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a liar, you&#8217;ll encounter what the New   York boys call a &#8220;screamer&#8221; gig.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when the mom is screaming, &#8220;Where&#8217;s your bandleader?\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t hire this band!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When we do A\/B gigs, &#8220;Stratton&#8221; is at both gigs.\u00a0 The B Band is led by Alice Stratton, my wife, an expert dance leader.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve sent out two versions of Yiddishe Cup on a single night.\u00a0 Not often.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hardly worth the logistical contortions: Yiddishe Cup does mitosis.\u00a0 I name the groups the A Band and the B Band.
