On January 21, 2005, to be exact. That afternoon I went to Hillcrest cemetery to tell my parents about the impending evening show. Snow covered all the flat-level headstones at Hillcrest. I found \u201cSiegal\u201d but not \u201cStratton.\u201d However, I think I made successful contact with my parents.<\/p>\n<p>But how about connecting with the president of the United States? <em>What if George W. Bush<\/em> <em>declares war on some country today and the <\/em>Jeopardy<em> show doesn&#8217;t air tonight?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I emailed everybody about the show. I played tennis. But I couldn\u2019t concentrate on no tennis game!<\/p>\n<p>I knew, in advance, the outcome of Ted&#8217;s <em>Jeopardy<\/em> game; I had been to California for the taping three months before. But I wasn&#8217;t allowed to tell anybody the result. The day of the airing (and cemetery visit), a friend said, \u201cBert, you wouldn\u2019t be throwing a party tonight if Teddy hadn\u2019t won.\u201d Maybe. I didn&#8217;t answer her. I planned to host a viewing get-together. I worried some more about W. and war.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32777 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ted-on-J-best-from-CJN-2005-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"137\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Ted faced<\/strong><\/span> a Boston book editor and \u201ca graduate student originally from Johnson City, Tennessee,&#8221; which is <em>Jeopardy<\/em>-talk for \u201cThis guy from Tennessee is now living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, running a lab at MIT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ted was formidable, don&#8217;t ever forget that. For instance, he cleaned up in the category of \u201cOur Lady,\u201d about Catholic shrines, like Our Lady of Czestochowa (Poland) and Our Lady of Gethsemani (Kentucky). Ted &#8212; a recent Brandeis graduate &#8212; knew his Catholic shrines.<\/p>\n<p>(There&#8217;s a play-by-play of all recent Jeopardy games on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.j-archive.com\/\">J! Archive<\/a>, a site run by Robert Knecht Schmidt, a Clevelander and former <em>Jeopardy <\/em>contestant.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Going into<\/strong> <\/span>Final Jeopardy, Ted was in second place, the Boston editor and defending champ was in third, and the Tennessee grad student was in first. The Final Jeopardy category was \u201cFictional Children.\u201d The question was \u201cThis boy, introduced in a 1902 book, flew away from his mother when he was 7 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merv Griffin made a fortune on the <em>Jeopardy<\/em> think music, which he wrote. And he owned the show, too, which he sold to Sony.<\/p>\n<p>I felt like I was watching my kid line up a 50-yard field goal at the Ohio State-Michigan game with a second left on the clock. I was helpless to affect the result. That&#8217;s the craziest part about being a parent &#8212; all the collateral, out-of-your-control joy and pain. (And it never ends until you end.)<\/p>\n<p>The Boston editor answered, \u201cPeter Pan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Correct. She went up to $10,900.<\/p>\n<p>Ted said, \u201cPeter Pan.\u201d He went up to $13,399.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>The Tennessee<\/strong><\/span> student said, \u201cThe Little Prince.\u201d He went down to $7,900.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Trebek announced: \u201cThe new champion, Ted Stratton, a reporter from Cleveland Heights, Ohio.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Ted Stratton was on Jeopardy 20 years ago.
