Even Alice&#8217;s mother (a small-town Jew from West Virginia) went to Florida annually in <em>her <\/em>childhood. \u00a0\u00a0That was in the 1930s, to a kosher hotel in Miami Beach.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>I married into<\/strong><\/span> money.\u00a0 Or so I thought.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 [See the post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/12\/major-roofer\/\">&#8220;Major Roofer.&#8221;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3123\" title=\"fla-fishing-the-reel-world\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/fla-fishing-the-reel-world-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"fla-fishing-the-reel-world\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/fla-fishing-the-reel-world-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/fla-fishing-the-reel-world.jpg 469w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the mid-1980s, I took my parents&#8217; car and drove from Boca Raton (where my parents had a condo) to Miami Beach, looking for extremely old Jews.\u00a0 The Boca Raton Jews weren&#8217;t old<em> <\/em>enough for me; I wanted to see Isaac Bashevis Singer and similar <em>alter kockers<\/em> in Collins   Avenue cafeterias.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Philip Roth&#8217;s father<\/strong><\/span> had stayed at the Hotel Singapore. So had Meyer Lansky.\u00a0 Mickey Katz patronized the Delano.\u00a0 (I didn&#8217;t see these men. Florida, 1983<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last winter I returned to Miami   Beach and saw very few old Jews.\u00a0 I saw a lot of jet-setters speaking foreign languages and wearing nearly nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed the Clevelander Hotel was spiffed up; the bedroom floors had a silicon seal to keep the guests&#8217; puke from seeping to the rooms below. The Clevelander was now rocking.\u00a0 I looked for T-shirts in the hotel gift shop and read about the silicon seal in a local newspaper article.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>At the Fontainebleau<\/strong><\/span> Hotel, Max Weinberg&#8217;s swing band was playing in the lobby.\u00a0 The horn players &#8212; studio musicians from California &#8212; were wailing.\u00a0 What a treat, and it was free.<\/p>\n<p>I phoned the cultural arts director at the Boca Raton JCC.\u00a0 She was on vacation.\u00a0 I wondered, Where does a Miamian go for winter vacation?\u00a0 I left a voice mail: &#8220;Yiddishe Cup wants to play in Boca again!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Success.  We landed the Boca fish.\u00a0\u00a0 Yiddishe Cup plays the <a href=\"http:\/\/levisjcc.org\/index.php?submenu=CulturalArts&amp;src=gendocs&amp;ref=MusicalPerformance&amp;category=arts\">Boca Raton\u00a0 JCC<\/a> this Sun.
