A couple of my musicians freaked out <\/strong><\/span>when a critic called Yiddishe Cup’s first CD “schizophrenic.” \u00a0(Or was it the second, third, or fourth CD?) \u00a0The reviewer, who said a ton of nice stuff, said we were schizophrenic because we attempted so many different styles.<\/p>\n That’s all the band members could think about: we’re schizos.<\/p>\n You need the skin of a rhino to be a performer.<\/p>\n I mean, I’ve had two death threats in the real estate biz.\u00a0 That<\/em> bothered me. “I’ve got a gun” stuff.\u00a0 One guy was pissed because I was a Jewboy born with a silver spoon in my mouth.\u00a0 (He didn’t say “mouth.”)\u00a0 The other guy was just pissed \u2014 pissed at everybody.\u00a0 Tenants hate landlords.\u00a0 We know that. \u00a0You need the skin of a rhino.<\/p>\n Everybody has an opinion.<\/strong><\/span> Particularly in the arts. \u00a0\u00a0If you don’t have one, here are a couple:<\/p>\n The quickest way to knee-cap a jazz group: “They don’t swing.”<\/p>\n A blues band: “No soul.”<\/p>\n A klezmer band: “Dorks in vests.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A couple of my musicians freaked out when a critic called Yiddishe Cup’s first CD “schizophrenic.” \u00a0(Or was it the second, third, or fourth CD?) \u00a0The reviewer, who said a ton of nice stuff, said we were schizophrenic because we attempted so many different styles.
