{"id":277,"date":"2009-06-04T07:08:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-04T11:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=277"},"modified":"2009-08-01T17:08:20","modified_gmt":"2009-08-01T21:08:20","slug":"double-portion-of-manna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/04\/double-portion-of-manna\/","title":{"rendered":"DOUBLE PORTION OF MANNA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Not too many sidemen care about<\/strong><\/span> the contract.\u00a0 They just want to know their cut.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s the way it should be.\u00a0 The sidemen aren&#8217;t dealing with the kvetching bar mitzvah moms and uptight brides.\u00a0 And they aren&#8217;t having meetings at their houses discussing whether the bride is going to circle the groom or not.\u00a0 (The bride often circles the groom seven times at a Jewish wedding.)\u00a0 Or is the dad going to do the welcome toast before or after the challah blessing?<\/p>\n<p>I always try to get paid at the gig \u2014 take the client over to a corner table and have him sign the check.  I get at least a double portion for being the bandleader.  Why?\u00a0 Because Yiddishe Cup is not just a club-date band. (<em>Club<\/em> <em>date<\/em> means <em>private party<\/em> band.)\u00a0\u00a0 Yiddishe Cup is a concert-playing band that rehearses and has ongoing expenses \u2014 like advertising and travel expenses.\u00a0 And I want to recoup that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>In Cleveland if a top-flight musician <\/strong><\/span>gets $200 per night, he&#8217;s happy.\u00a0 That&#8217;s $50 an hour.\u00a0 I pay my guys more.<br \/>\n&#8212;-<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">Tomorrow:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">AT THE A.K. LODGE . . .
