{"id":21254,"date":"2015-02-11T08:00:51","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T12:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=21254"},"modified":"2015-03-17T14:12:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T18:12:00","slug":"machers-on-the-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/11\/machers-on-the-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>MACHERS<\/i> ON THE ROOF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Howard Metzenbaum<\/strong> <\/span>was the big name in my father\u2019s generation.\u00a0 Metzenbaum made millions in parking lots, and eventually became a U.S. senator.\u00a0 My father and Metzenbaum were born the same year, 1917, in Cleveland.\u00a0 My dad didn\u2019t know Metzenbaum but enjoyed following his career.<\/p>\n<p>Metzenbaum, in his later years, owned a condo at Three Village, the holy of holies for upscale living in Cleveland.\u00a0 The building went up in 1978 near Cedar Road at I-271.\u00a0 The Three Village condo development was wooded and secluded.\u00a0 My parents lived nearby, at the Mark IV apartments (now called the Hamptons).\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why my mother went to apartment living from a colonial in South Euclid.\u00a0 She was a gardener, and then suddenly she was\u00a0 doing tomatoes in pots on her Mark IV balcony.\u00a0 My parents liked brand-new housing; they weren&#8217;t keen on used.\u00a0 Everything had to be shiny and new, maybe because they grew up in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Across from the Mark IV was Acacia on the Green &#8212; a step up, rent- and prestige-wise.\u00a0 Next to Acacia was Sherri Park, a step down.\u00a0 Across from Sherri Park was Point East, a step up from Acacia but down from Three Village.\u00a0 These buildings all went up in the 1970s and were popular with my parents&#8217; generation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/three-village.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21434\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/three-village-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"three village\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/three-village-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/three-village.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>My parents<\/strong><\/span> never went inside Metzenbaum\u2019s building.\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 I visited a friend who bought a condo in Three Village.\u00a0 Metzenbaum was long gone &#8212;
