{"id":2019,"date":"2010-09-08T07:55:08","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T11:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=2019"},"modified":"2012-03-26T17:49:25","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T21:49:25","slug":"portraits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/08\/portraits\/","title":{"rendered":"PORTRAITS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Two-thirds of the art <\/strong><\/span>in my house is by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artwanted.com\/artist.cfm?artid=1519\">Irwin Weinberger,<\/a> Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s singer.\u00a0 Irwin is also a painter and middle-school art teacher.<\/p>\n<p>He did a portrait of my kids 19 years ago.\u00a0 I thought the kids &#8212; those pipsqueaks &#8212; were cute.\u00a0 But their pipsqueak phase dragged on for years; I would stare at that painting and say, &#8220;Grow up already!&#8221;\u00a0 Schlepping kids crosstown to gymnastics meets was not fun.\u00a0 Schlepping the youngest child to an 8 a.m. hockey game in Parma Heights was not fun.\u00a0 Sitting through my daughter&#8217;s swim meets was not entirely pleasant.\u00a0 (The diving part was pleasant, but the swimming races &#8212; which she had nothing to do with &#8212; weren&#8217;t fun.)<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2029\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><em><em><em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/kids-portrait-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2029\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2029\" title=\"kids-portrait-21\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/kids-portrait-21-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;em&gt; &quot;Pipsqueaks.&quot; .&lt;\/em&gt;\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/kids-portrait-21-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/kids-portrait-21.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><p id=\"caption-attachment-2029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"> <\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>As it turned out,<\/strong><\/span> the whole thing &#8212; childrearing &#8212; lasted about two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup has been in existence 21 years, and that, too, has felt like two weeks. One day &#8212; back in 1989 &#8212; we were playing a Cleveland Heights street fair, and the next day&#8211; 21 years later&#8211; we were playing a Cleveland  Heights street fair.*\u00a0 What&#8217;s with that?<\/p>\n<p>We &#8212; the Yiddishe Cup musicians &#8212; enjoy the short drive to work.\u00a0 We are in our own backyard, kind of \u00a0like the working musicians in Las Vegas or Branson, Mo.\u00a0 The downside to playing Cleveland a lot is everybody has heard us a million times.<\/p>\n<p>Make it new.\u00a0 Or go nuts.<\/p>\n<p>The newest Yiddishe Cup recruit, our drummer, has been with us 12 years.\u00a0 We have new music, but not new guys.<\/p>\n<p>I rarely put the musicians&#8217; names front and center. \u00a0It&#8217;s all about Team Yiddishe Cup.\u00a0 What if a Yiddishe Cup &#8220;star&#8221; leaves? However, the band did play Parade the Circle in University Circle &#8212; close to, but not in, Cleveland Heights.
