I play<\/strong><\/span> house concerts; I perform in people\u2019s living rooms and sleep in their bedrooms. I play guitar, sing and tell stories.\u00a0 I\u2019ve taught a class or two at old-timey music camps in West Virginia.<\/p>\n

The house-concert scene is my Airbnb, except I get paid; I don\u2019t pay.\u00a0 And I usually sell a handful of CDs.<\/p>\n

I wish the\u00a0 house-concert scene was bigger.\u00a0 Fifty people in a living room is my best draw.<\/p>\n

I saw<\/strong><\/span> the movie Inside Llewyn Davis<\/em> recently and thought to myself “that\u2019s me!” except I\u2019m happier than that guy.\u00a0 Right now I\u2019m doing a Bix Beiderbecke transcription in a bedroom in Columbus, Ohio, and enjoying myself.\u00a0 I\u2019ll\u00a0 be in Pittsburgh tomorrow. I live cheaply and save money, so when I’m 65 — three years from now — I\u2019ll stop this train and settle down.\u00a0 I’m thinking about Austin.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of sleeping in other people\u2019s beds.<\/p>\n

I WAS A HERRING ADDICT<\/big><\/big><\/strong><\/p>\n

In my<\/strong><\/span> refrigerator, I had Golden Herring (Brampton, Ontario), Ma Cohen\u2019s (Detroit) and Ducktrap River (Belfast, Maine). In wine sauce, not in cream sauce. Must say \u201ctidbits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ma Cohen\u2019s was the best. It was lower in sodium and sugar than the others. They all had omega-3s.<\/p>\n

I bought my Ma\u2019s at Corky & Lenny\u2019s, my Ducktrap at Whole Foods, and Golden at Heinen\u2019s. For a while I thought \u201cGolden\u201d might be the owner\u2019s name, like in Al Golden, my late uncle. I Googled the company; Golden is owned by Lorne Krongold of Brampton, Ontario.<\/p>\n

I stopped<\/strong><\/span> by a Polish deli in Slavic Village, Cleveland. The place had a ton of herring, even matjes<\/em> herring, which I had only seen previously at KlezKamp.<\/p>\n

Here’s an interesting tidbit:\u00a0 1) Herring was a major source of protein for impoverished Jews in Eastern Europe.\u00a0 2) Don’t take herring to a hunger center.\u00a0 They’ll refuse your donation.\u00a0 They’ll say, “We can’t even give this stuff away.”<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t get it — herring — you probably think this subject is idiotic. But listen,\u00a0 you can<\/em> acquire herring love. Start out on sardines and move up. A third way: anchovies.<\/p>\n

My sister<\/strong><\/span> and I used to eat anchovies right from the can, straight. My sister isn\u2019t that crazy about herring. I don\u2019t get that.<\/p>\n

I’m down to a jar of herring a month.\u00a0 Something bad about salt, my doc says.
