When my wife’s computer <\/strong><\/span>started whirring and stinking up the house, I told her not to worry.\u00a0 It would correct itself.<\/p>\n It crashed.\u00a0 No biggie. \u00a0\u00a0She got a new computer.<\/p>\n Then my violinist’s computer crashed. \u00a0\u00a0It was a laptop he carried on every trip.\u00a0 It was like a Strad to him.\u00a0 A Stradivarius.\u00a0 Three days after the crash, he was back online.\u00a0 No big deal.<\/p>\n My computer crashed.<\/p>\n Big<\/em> deal. I went nuts.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n My real estate data disappeared.\u00a0 I lost five years of checkbook data.<\/p>\n My computer repairman was dead; he was killed in a freak bicycle accident.\u00a0 And my back-up computer guy was in medical school — in Hungary.\u00a0 I couldn’t even write a check, and I didn’t know my bank balance.<\/p>\n I called Quickbooks and got a technician from the Pacific time zone.\u00a0 Pacific Coast people, they seem smart on the phone. The tech person found the problem — after three hours of phone jabber — and fixed it for $172.\u00a0 I would have paid triple that.<\/p>\n From yesterday’s Wall Street Journal<\/em>:\u00a0 “Triggers for broken-heart syndrome seem as varied as the number of people affected . . .
