{"id":1205,"date":"2010-01-13T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2010-01-13T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=1205"},"modified":"2012-03-26T17:26:02","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T21:26:02","slug":"klez-threads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/13\/klez-threads\/","title":{"rendered":"KLEZ CLOTHES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>A lot of bands wear all black.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup doesn&#8217;t do that.\u00a0 Too East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>In Toronto I saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/theflyingbulgars.tripod.com\/\">Flying Bulgars<\/a> in what looked like clown suits.<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup is somewhere between the Flying Bulgars and black.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>We have five looks:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. The tux with colorful hand-sewn lapels.\u00a0 The downside to this is everybody knows we&#8217;re <em>shnorring<\/em> at the hors d&#8217;oeuvres table at weddings.\u00a0 All-black tuxes would make us invisible.<\/p>\n<p>2. Blue undertaker suit.\u00a0 Keeps the focus off us and on the bridal couple or bat mitzvah girl.<\/p>\n<p>3. Solid-colored shirt with colorful tie.\u00a0 This is our middle-school art teacher look. Works well at laidback bar mitzvahs.<\/p>\n<p>4. Hawaiian-style shirt.\u00a0 A professional costume designer made these shirts.\u00a0 They wash well and dry quickly. \u00a0A real show-biz shirt.\u00a0 When we played 13 gigs in six days in Florida, the quick-dry feature came in handy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yes, Florida in January . . . <\/strong><\/span> I wish Yiddishe Cup would land another run like that. But the mega-condo booker in Florida won&#8217;t re-book us.<\/p>\n<p>Was it our lyrics?<\/p>\n<p>You judge. Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s &#8220;Tumbalalaika&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><em>What can grow, grow without rain?<\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;This,&#8221; says our singer, grabbing his crotch.<\/p>\n<p><em>What can burn, burn for many years? <\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;Not love,&#8221; our singer says. &#8220;Hardly. Try hemorrhoids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>A comedian, Stu, was our last booker<\/strong><\/span> in Florida.\u00a0 I should have known he was bad news because his email address was Suntanstu@ and his Web site had photos of him with Engelbert Humperdinck.<\/p>\n<p>Stu&#8217;s idea of a joke was not paying for our sound (speakers, mics) and backline (instrumental rental) after I bought airplane tickets to his showcase in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>One final Yiddishe Cup look:<\/p>\n<p>5. T-shirt with the Yiddishe Cup logo. We wear these when we play summer park gigs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Our singer, Irwin Weinberger, wears <\/strong><\/span>the Yiddishe Cup T-shirt around town too. The rest of us don&#8217;t wear our shirts much off stage.\u00a0 Do you see LeBron in the grocery store in a Cavs jersey?<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livingtraditions.org\/\">KlezKamp<\/a> I saw a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezmerconservatory.com\/\">Klezmer Conservatory Band<\/a> musician in a Montreal Jazz Festival T-shirt. \u00a0That was cool, synergistically speaking; KCB had played Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>I wear T-shirts from the Concert of Colors (Detroit) and CityFolk (Dayton,  Ohio).\u00a0 Yiddishe Cup played those festivals.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Klamberg, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezmatics.com\">Klezmatics&#8217;<\/a> singer, in a Klezmatics T-shirt at KlezKamp.\u00a0 (Correction: Sklamberg.)<\/p>\n<p>On second thought, maybe<em> <\/em>Irwin Weinberger is cool.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">&#8212;-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">1 of 2 posts for 1\/13\/10.\u00a0 Please see the next post too.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of bands wear all black.
