Lakewood International<\/strong><\/span> News, a magazine store, carried the Paris Review<\/em>, Partisan Review, Kenyon Review <\/em>and porn.\u00a0 <\/em>About half the store was porn.<\/p>\n

The proprietor, Gil, was a part-time railroader.\u00a0 He and several railroad buddies manned the elevated counter, which was a lookout tower for nailing shoplifters and pervs.<\/p>\n

I went to Lakewood News.<\/p>\n

Where else<\/strong><\/span> could I read an interview of William Styron in the Partisan Review,<\/em> and Bustin\u2019 Out<\/em> in the same visit?<\/p>\n

Gil lost his lease.\u00a0 (I wasn’t Gil’s landlord.)\u00a0 I had a vacant store.\u00a0 Maybe Gil and I could do business together.\u00a0 A bank tenant had bailed on me down the street.\u00a0 I thought I was good for 30 years with the bank, but then all banks in the world started merging in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The bank owed me rent until the bank was re-leased.\u00a0 The bank, through back channels, quickly found a new tenant — the city.\u00a0 The city planned to open a health-department annex.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 Cockroach inspectors would be my new tenants.<\/p>\n

Except the<\/strong><\/span> city didn’t move very fast.\u00a0 There were various \u201creadings\u201d at various city council meetings.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Gil, the magazine store owner, told a couple people he was getting the bank store.\u00a0 A Plain Dealer<\/em> reporter called me.<\/p>\n

Possible PD<\/em> headline: “Stratton New Porn Czar.”<\/p>\n

The old porn czar was Reuben Sturman, a local-boy-made-good and the nation’s largest porn distributor.<\/p>\n

I got<\/strong><\/span> scared.\u00a0 I hand-delivered a media package to the Plain Dealer<\/em> reporter.\u00a0 I did a Q&A with myself.\u00a0 I answered: \u201cI believe in the First Amendment and the bookstore would be an asset.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just<\/em> porn.\u00a0 Ever heard of the Paris Review<\/em>? I\u2019ll rent to the magazine store.\u201d\u00a0 I wanted the city to hurry up, so I had created a little tension, via the press.<\/p>\n

The Plain Dealer<\/em> story came out.\u00a0 (Nothing too horrible.)\u00a0 But suddenly the city fast-tracked the legislation and rented the space.<\/p>\n

That was the only time I ever spun the press.<\/p>\n

\nHere’s the beginning of “Adult store’s Detroit Ave. move thwarted” by Paul Shepard, <\/em>Plain Dealer, 6\/21\/89:<\/em><\/p>\n

At first glance, Albert Stratton, landlord of a prime piece of downtown Lakewood real estate, appears to be a person to be envied.<\/p>\n

Over the past month, city officials as well as the Lakewood International News magazine shop have courted Stratton, seeking to rent his vacant storefront at Detroit and Victoria Aves.<\/p>\n

But with the City Council\u2019s refusal Monday to allow Stratton\u2019s lease of the store and a proposed ordinance to limit the location of so-called adult-oriented businesses, it appears Stratton will have to sue the city to get the magazine shop as a tenant.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not happy,\u201d Stratton said yesterday.\u00a0 \u201cI feel like I\u2019m caught in the middle of this dispute between the city and the Lakewood International News store.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy only goal is to rent the store.\u00a0 Whoever signs a lease first gets it, but I think both would be fine tenants for me.\u201d<\/small><\/p>\n
