Shredded Wheat moved from Niagara Falls years ago, but the cereal belt remains.\u00a0 Cleveland is the buckle.<\/p>\n

Clevelander Marty Gitlin just published a cereal encyclopedia, The<\/em> Great American Cereal Book<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 (Abrams Images), featuring \u201chundreds of images of vintage cereal boxes and spokes-characters — Tony the Tiger, Snap, Crackle, Pop, and Lucky the Leprechaun.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had a<\/strong><\/span> prospective store tenant who wanted to open a cereal store.\u00a0 He opened down the street and went under almost immediately.\u00a0 He was Cereal Central, aka Cerealicious. \u00a0 Nobody in Cleveland wanted to eat cereal in a store.\u00a0 (He also had a store in Columbus near Ohio State.\u00a0 Apparently,\u00a0 OSU students were willing to eat cereal in a restaurant.)<\/p>\n

Most people like to eat cereal alone and not talk about it.\u00a0 That\u2019s my guess.<\/p>\n

In my temple bulletin, no bar mitzvah kid’s profile reads: \u201cJacob is interested in cereal.\u201d\u00a0 More often it\u2019s “Morgan enjoys\u00a0 Sudoku and chatting online, and is a member of the recycling club.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musicians<\/strong><\/span> — at least one — eat cereal at home after late-night gigs.\u00a0 Musicians can\u2019t fall asleep after gigs.\u00a0 Musicians\u2019 heads are filled with fruit loops of \u201cSimon Tov\u201d and \u201cHava Nagilah.\u201d\u00a0 (Klezmer musicians’ heads, that is.)<\/p>\n

Shredded wheat choices at 1 a.m.: Barbara\u2019s shredded wheat or Quaker shredded wheat.\u00a0 (Shredded wheat<\/em> is not trademarkable.)\u00a0 I mix Barbara’s with Autumn Harvest (Kashi).<\/p>\n
