I went easy<\/strong><\/span> on a tenant, rent-wise, because he called the police on a leaded-glass thief, who had stolen windows\u00a0from the apartment building’s entrance.\u00a0 (The windows were sidelights.)

The cops<\/strong><\/span> asked my tenant, \u201cWould you be a witness?\u201d \u00a0My guy — Bill Livingstone — said yes.\u00a0\u00a0 I appreciated his civic involvement.<\/p>\n

Livingstone was nosy.\u00a0 That was a good thing.\u00a0 Livingstone, a poodle groomer, stayed at the building 23 years.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0vandal scrawled graffiti on a front door.\u00a0 Livingstone wasn\u2019t around. (Different building.)<\/p>\n

The building manager knew the graffiti \u201cartist.\u201d\u00a0 She even knew his phone number.\u00a0 My custodian personally knows this derelict<\/em>?\u00a0 The graffiti “artist” was a friend of a friend of the custodian.\u00a0 The “artist” hung out at a skaters coffeehouse and had a recognizable tag.\u00a0 My custodian,\u00a0 a lesbian brakeman with multiple piercings, knew the scene.<\/p>\n

I phoned<\/strong><\/span> the graffiti kid.\u00a0 What if he was nuts?\u00a0 I hung up.\u00a0 Let the cops handle it.<\/p>\n

The kid called me.\u00a0 \u201cYou just called my cell.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hate that.<\/p>\n

The cops found him and made him clean up the doors. \u00a0\u00a0His mom even helped.\u00a0 The kid was in high school. \u00a0I didn\u2019t press charges because he cleaned the door.<\/p>\n

Re: the leaded-glass <\/strong><\/span>sidelights thief.\u00a0 That guy was caught due to Bill Livingstone’s accurate ID of the man.\u00a0 (The thief sold the windows to an antiques store.)\u00a0 The man was charged with aggravated burglary and grand theft.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t do any jail time.\u00a0 He made restitution to me over a couple years.<\/p>\n
