Ben & Jerry\u2019s <\/strong><\/span>was supposed to hand out free ice cream at last year’s Yiddishe Cup concert in University Heights, Ohio.\u00a0 But Ben & Jerry\u2019s didn’t show up.\u00a0 They received no reminder call from the city, supposedly.<\/p>\n

Why would a private business, like Ben & Jerry\u2019s, need a reminder call from the government?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it supposed to be the other way around?<\/p>\n

The University Heights mayor borrowed Yiddishe Cup\u2019s microphone and told the crowd, \u201cGet your tomatoes ready.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a snafu.\u00a0 There\u2019s no ice cream tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody booed.\u00a0 There was no ice cream riot.\u00a0 Klezmer crowds are polite.\u00a0 The Russians have assimilated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe the city<\/strong><\/span> will pass out Klondike bars tomorrow night (for the 2011 Yiddishe Cup concert).\u00a0 Easier to deal with — Klondikes.\u00a0 And they’re kosher.\u00a0 Just dole out a few cartons of Klondikes, like in years past.<\/p>\n

Ice cream hondling<\/em> (negotiating) is tough — on the band.\u00a0\u00a0 Last year\u2019s show was our best because listeners weren\u2019t continually streaming back and forth from the ice cream stand.\u00a0 There was no ice cream stand.<\/p>\n

I told the guys in the band to stop making ice cream references.\u00a0 I said, \u201cWe might not be asked back if you keep talking about ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup\u2019s pianist, Alan Douglass, told the audience how happy he was they hadn’t left.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou mean you came to hear us<\/em>?\u00a0 You really like us!\u201d\u00a0 Let it go, Alan.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow at<\/strong><\/span> University Heights, see Yiddishe Cup and the Klondikes.\u00a0 That\u2019s my prediction.<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup plays 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thurs. Aug. 25) at Wiley Middle School auditorium, 2181 Miramar Blvd., University Hts., Ohio.\u00a0 The concert is in the air-conditioned auditorium, rather than on the lawn, due to outside construction.\u00a0 Free admission.\u00a0 Might be ice cream.\u00a0 Might not, too.\u00a0 Call 216-932-7800 for more info.<\/span><\/p>\n
