Doctors like to<\/strong><\/span> complain how their pay isn\u2019t what it used to be.\u00a0 Another\u00a0 gripe of docs is the increased paperwork.<\/p>\n

But doctors do all right.\u00a0 They are one of the few professions that still hire bands.<\/p>\n

A side benefit for Yiddishe Cup is we sometimes get free medical advice at gigs.\u00a0\u00a0 At a Pittsburgh wedding, a doctor checked one of our guys for a hernia in the men\u2019s room stall.<\/p>\n

In Cleveland, <\/strong><\/span>a doctor asked me<\/em> for an appointment.\u00a0 He was a Washington heart specialist, considering a job at the Cleveland Clinic.\u00a0 He played mandolin.\u00a0 He wanted to know if Cleveland had a good quality of life.<\/p>\n

I said yes.<\/p>\n

He spent several years at the Cleveland Clinic giving me \u2013- and others — the lowdown on HDL.\u00a0 (The lowdown is there is no sure-fire way to raise your HDL.)<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup occasionally gets gigs from immigrant doctors from South Africa. \u00a0 One doc had a diploma on his office wall from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa). \u00a0I thought “witch doctor\u201d — like the doctor in the Mickey Katz parody \u201cMy Son the Knish Doctor.\u201d\u00a0 The Katz doc had studied at the Bwana Wana Yeshiva.<\/p>\n

South African doctors are often Litvaks<\/em> (Lithuanian Jews) and plugged into Yiddish culture — what’s left of it.<\/p>\n

I met a doc<\/strong><\/span> at Klezkamp who was atrocious on soprano sax and would repeat,\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m a doctor!\u00a0 I\u2019m a doctor!\u201d\u00a0 That worked.\u00a0 It made him feel better.<\/p>\n

He had a point.\u00a0 He saved lives.\u00a0 So what if he couldn\u2019t play \u201cKhasidim Tantz\u201d<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup had a medical student in the band.\u00a0 Dave Jaffe, guitarist\/singer and Case medical student.\u00a0 He lasted a year.\u00a0 Med school and<\/em> the band were too much.<\/p>\n

Doctors often form their own bands because of their busy schedules.\u00a0 These bands play a couple benefits a year and often have names like No Evidence of Disease.<\/p>\n

I wish I <\/strong><\/span>had studied harder in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t mind being a brain surgeon with a side interest in klezmer.<\/p>\n

Turns out I’m a klezmer musician with a side interest in brain surgery.\u00a0 This scares people.<\/p>\n

I accept most insurance plans.<\/p>\n
