\nThe Intakes<\/strong><\/span>, a JCC boys’ club, should have met at the old Council Educational Alliance on Kinsman Road.\u00a0 The Intakes was a throwback to a Depression-era settlement-house boys’ club.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the Intakes was to keep teenage boys off the streets, which wasn\u2019t too hard because we studied so hard we rarely went out.<\/p>\n

The club <\/strong><\/span>president had a regular Saturday night excuse:\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve got too much homework.\u00a0 I can’t go out.\u201d\u00a0 On Saturday night<\/em>?\u00a0\u00a0 One summer the club president landed a grant to write a report on the crystal structure of molecules.<\/p>\n

The Intakes Club didn\u2019t \u201cintake\u201d girls.\u00a0 We were for the most part afraid of girls.\u00a0 We played poker, miniature golf, bowled and held meetings.<\/p>\n

Our advisor was a social worker from New York.\u00a0 He often called us \u201cschmucks,\u201d which we found endearing.<\/p>\n

We debated<\/strong><\/span> where to spend our money, which we earned by selling salamis and Passover macaroons.<\/p>\n

Should we go to New York or Washington?<\/p>\n

We went to both, on the Hound.\u00a0 (Two different trips.)<\/p>\n

In New York we went to the Statue of Liberty, saw Jeopardy! <\/em>live and ate at Katz\u2019s Deli.\u00a0 I bought Existentialism Versus Marxism <\/em>in a Village bookstore.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t finished it yet.<\/p>\n

In Washington<\/strong><\/span> we met our congressman and pantsed an Intake back at the hotel.\u00a0 We tried to post his pics on the \u2019net, but got an error message: Internet not invented yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our congressman, Charles Vanik, had an administrative aide, Mark Talisman,\u00a0 a small smart Jew who was just eight years older than us.\u00a0 He seemed to know everything about the government.\u00a0 He gave us a private meeting.\u00a0 He was the puppet master for the entire suburban east side of Cleveland.<\/p>\n

Talisman was an inspiration.\u00a0 He made it out of the tough Harvard-Lee neighborhood to Harvard U.<\/p>\n

We should have made Mark Talisman an honorary Intake.<\/p>\n

We shouldn’t have taken those naked pictures.<\/p>\n
