Some lectures might be dangerous, according to the brochure.<\/p>\n<p>The first lecture is June 15, featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezmerconservatory.com\">Hankus Netsky<\/a>, bandleader of the Klezmer Conservatory Band.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>6\/15\u00a0 Hankus Netsky<\/strong><\/span> HOW DO I STOP THIS THING?<\/p>\n<p>Should a klezmer song end with a &#8220;squirt&#8221; (quarter note) or a &#8220;pop&#8221; (eighth note)?\u00a0\u00a0 Or how about a simple \u00a0I-V-I chord tag?\u00a0 Or \u00a0should the bandleader just scream, &#8220;It was all a mistake!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Netsky is clear and emotive.\u00a0 Expect audience participation, including hummus-smearing and firearms.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>6\/22\u00a0 Sarah Gordon<\/strong><\/span> WEATHER THAT KILLS<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejewishweek.com\/special_sections\/36_under_36\/sarah_mina_gordon_31\">Sarah<\/a>, a singer and third-grade teacher in New York, will talk about corporal punishment. \u00a0Gordon&#8217;s punk-klez band, Yiddish Princess, is best known for &#8220;Painkiller&#8221; and &#8220;Weather That Kills.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon gives us an insider&#8217;s look at the combative multivalent New York klezmer scene.\u00a0 Bring knives. \u00a0Sarah \u00a0is going to recreate the <em>West Side Story<\/em> switchblade scene in Yiddish.\u00a0 Volunteers needed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>7\/9\u00a0 Don Friedman<\/strong><\/span> PRAISED BE KLEZMER!<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s drummer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.practicethis.info\/main.html\">Don Friedman<\/a>, \u00a0is the spiritual leader of The Churchagogue in Twinsburg,  Ohio. \u00a0Donny invented the Jewish freewill offering; it isn&#8217;t free.\u00a0 Donny was the recipient of Sweden&#8217;s &#8220;Little Drummer Boy&#8221; prize ($753,000) last year and invested much of that in upgrading The Churchagogue, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5029\" style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;\" title=\"tick-talk1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tick-talk1-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"tick-talk1\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tick-talk1-300x229.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tick-talk1.jpg 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>which attracts more than 2,000 worshippers on a typical <em>shabbes <\/em>morning.\u00a0 Free refills on the Mogen David through &#8220;Eyn Keloheynu.&#8221;\u00a0 Donny delivers his most famous sermon tonight: &#8220;Time. Sometimes it flies by.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>7\/29\u00a0 Alice Stratton<\/strong><\/span> OLD-SCHOOL MATH<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6O9x6z6mWaI\">Alice<\/a> talks about pacing and musical symmetry.\u00a0 She takes us back to the days when hora tempos were T-120 (120 beats\/minute) and veteran pianist <a href=\"http:\/\/catskills.brown.edu\/interviews\/sokolow.html\">Pete Sokolow<\/a>&#8216;s blood pressure was under 120.\u00a0 Alice, a dance leader with Yiddishe Cup, makes her second Challah Fame appearance tonight.\u00a0 In 2000 she debuted her dance &#8220;Some Kind of Cheesy Orgy&#8221; at The Challah Fame grand opening.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>8\/6\u00a0 Daniel Kahn<\/strong><\/span> SLACKIN&#8217; WITH DANNY K<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielkahn.com\/ThePaintedBird.htm\">Daniel Kahn<\/a>, a.k.a. Danny K, chants the trope of recuperative klezmer here.\u00a0 No worries, it&#8217;s all good.\u00a0 How to enjoy life by playing music, singing, or just listening.\u00a0 Kahn, from Berlin, does mixed-genre exploring, using ketchup, sauerkraut and clarinets.\u00a0 Samples afterward.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>9\/15\u00a0 Michael Winograd <\/strong><\/span> THE 2011 KLEZMER MANIFESTO<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelwinograd.com\">Wino<\/a>, the 28-year-old klez clarinet phenom,\u00a0delivers the first klez manifesto since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliciasvigals.com\/klezmer-essays.htm\">Alicia Svigals<\/a> wailed her &#8220;Against Nostalgia&#8221; rant at the 1996 Wesleyan University Klezmer Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of Winograd&#8217;s key points:<\/p>\n<p>1. It&#8217;s a lonely world.\u00a0 Hi, everybody.<br \/>\n2. I&#8217;ve done many things wrong.\u00a0 Sorry about that.<br \/>\n3. I get paid to eat at weddings. Why?<br \/>\n4. A scrap of paper in my wallet says I owe you.\u00a0 Shut up, scrap!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>10\/3 Ted Stratton<\/strong><\/span> MUSIC THAT REPELS<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.j-archive.com\/showplayer.php?player_id=228\">Stratton<\/a> focuses on life\u2019s basics: dirt, worms, aphids, flies and klezmer music.  What\u2019s real, what\u2019s not? What\u2019s fake, what\u2019s authentic? How Long Can It Go? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>10\/13\u00a0 Mark Rubin<\/strong><\/span> THE IN-N-OUT BURGER IN IASI,  ROMANIA<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.markrubin.com\/home.html\">Rubin<\/a> leads us on a virtual eating tour deep into Europe, a la <em>Borat<\/em>.\u00a0 Rubin focuses primarily on risk-taking in eating.<\/p>\n<p>Rubin will be barbecuing ribs throughout the lecture and not washing his hands.\u00a0 Some spitting too. Samples afterward.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>11\/2 Daniel Ducoff<\/strong><\/span> AQUA-KLEZMER<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/sfmambo0804.html\">Daniel Ducoff<\/a>, a swimmer and Yiddishe Cup dance leader, talks about the awe-inspiring aspects of the Jewish water experience.<\/p>\n<p>What is &#8220;difficult&#8221; will be &#8220;not difficult&#8221; after Daniel&#8217;s lecture.\u00a0 You will not be afraid of \u00a0the 10-meter board or the <em>mikvah<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mystical, glorious and powerful <em>mayim<\/em> (water). Heartbreaking too.\u00a0 Bring a suit.\u00a0 There will be a baby pool and high board. Also,  Moshe will pass out<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\"> learsi <\/span>refrigerator magnets afterwards.  \u201cLearsi\u201d\u00a0 is &#8220;Israel&#8221; spelled backwards.
