The first lecture is June 15, featuring Hankus Netsky<\/a>, bandleader of the Klezmer Conservatory Band.<\/p>\n 6\/15\u00a0 Hankus Netsky<\/strong><\/span> HOW DO I STOP THIS THING?<\/p>\n Should a klezmer song end with a “squirt” (quarter note) or a “pop” (eighth note)?\u00a0\u00a0 Or how about a simple \u00a0I-V-I chord tag?\u00a0 Or \u00a0should the bandleader just scream, “It was all a mistake!”<\/p>\n Netsky is clear and emotive.\u00a0 Expect audience participation, including hummus-smearing and firearms.<\/p>\n 6\/22\u00a0 Sarah Gordon<\/strong><\/span> WEATHER THAT KILLS<\/p>\n Sarah<\/a>, a singer and third-grade teacher in New York, will talk about corporal punishment. \u00a0Gordon’s punk-klez band, Yiddish Princess, is best known for “Painkiller” and “Weather That Kills.”\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon gives us an insider’s look at the combative multivalent New York klezmer scene.\u00a0 Bring knives. \u00a0Sarah \u00a0is going to recreate the West Side Story<\/em> switchblade scene in Yiddish.\u00a0 Volunteers needed.<\/p>\n 7\/9\u00a0 Don Friedman<\/strong><\/span> PRAISED BE KLEZMER!<\/p>\n Yiddishe Cup’s drummer, Don Friedman<\/a>, \u00a0is the spiritual leader of The Churchagogue in Twinsburg, Ohio. \u00a0Donny invented the Jewish freewill offering; it isn’t free.\u00a0 Donny was the recipient of Sweden’s “Little Drummer Boy” prize ($753,000) last year and invested much of that in upgrading The Churchagogue, 7\/29\u00a0 Alice Stratton<\/strong><\/span> OLD-SCHOOL MATH<\/p>\n Alice<\/a> talks about pacing and musical symmetry.\u00a0 She takes us back to the days when hora tempos were T-120 (120 beats\/minute) and veteran pianist Pete Sokolow<\/a>‘s blood pressure was under 120.\u00a0 Alice, a dance leader with Yiddishe Cup, makes her second Challah Fame appearance tonight.\u00a0 In 2000 she debuted her dance “Some Kind of Cheesy Orgy” at The Challah Fame grand opening.<\/p>\n 8\/6\u00a0 Daniel Kahn<\/strong><\/span> SLACKIN’ WITH DANNY K<\/p>\n Daniel Kahn<\/a>, a.k.a. Danny K, chants the trope of recuperative klezmer here.\u00a0 No worries, it’s all good.\u00a0 How to enjoy life by playing music, singing, or just listening.\u00a0 Kahn, from Berlin, does mixed-genre exploring, using ketchup, sauerkraut and clarinets.\u00a0 Samples afterward.<\/p>\n 9\/15\u00a0 Michael Winograd <\/strong><\/span> THE 2011 KLEZMER MANIFESTO<\/p>\n Wino<\/a>, the 28-year-old klez clarinet phenom,\u00a0delivers the first klez manifesto since Alicia Svigals<\/a> wailed her “Against Nostalgia” rant at the 1996 Wesleyan University Klezmer Conference.<\/p>\n Here are some of Winograd’s key points:<\/p>\n 1. It’s a lonely world.\u00a0 Hi, everybody. 10\/3 Ted Stratton<\/strong><\/span> MUSIC THAT REPELS<\/p>\n Stratton<\/a> focuses on life\u2019s basics: dirt, worms, aphids, flies and klezmer music. What\u2019s real, what\u2019s not? What\u2019s fake, what\u2019s authentic? What\u2019s cool, what\u2019s dumb? 10\/13\u00a0 Mark Rubin<\/strong><\/span> THE IN-N-OUT BURGER IN IASI, ROMANIA<\/p>\n Rubin<\/a> leads us on a virtual eating tour deep into Europe, a la Borat<\/em>.\u00a0 Rubin focuses primarily on risk-taking in eating.<\/p>\n Rubin will be barbecuing ribs throughout the lecture and not washing his hands.\u00a0 Some spitting too. Samples afterward.<\/p>\n 11\/2 Daniel Ducoff<\/strong><\/span> AQUA-KLEZMER<\/p>\n Daniel Ducoff<\/a>, a swimmer and Yiddishe Cup dance leader, talks about the awe-inspiring aspects of the Jewish water experience.<\/p>\n What is “difficult” will be “not difficult” after Daniel’s lecture.\u00a0 You will not be afraid of \u00a0the 10-meter board or the mikvah<\/em>.<\/p>\n Mystical, glorious and powerful mayim<\/em> (water). Heartbreaking too.\u00a0 Bring a suit.\u00a0 There will be a baby pool and high board. Expect some broken bones.<\/p>\n 11\/19 Walt Mahovlich<\/strong><\/span> SITUATION REPORT: THE GYPSIES AND THE JEWS<\/p>\n Walt<\/a>‘s lecture is a split-perception event.\u00a0 Half the audience wears “I \u2665Yiddish” buttons, and the other half\u00a0 gets 12\/1 Moshe Berlin<\/strong><\/span> THE BOUNDARIES OF BLUR<\/p>\n Israeli clarinetist Moshe Berlin<\/a> lectures in Hebrew on the differences between\u00a0Israeli and American klezmer music.\u00a0 Free Holy Land yarmulkes to all who attend. Also, Moshe will pass out learsi <\/span>refrigerator magnets afterwards. \u201cLearsi\u201d\u00a0 is “Israel” spelled backwards.
