I employed a custodian whose family<\/strong><\/span> was “a bunch of\u00a0 burglars,” according to the investigating cop.\u00a0 Why the cop had waited so long to tell me, I don’t know.<\/p>\n All along, the custodian’s kids had pilfered tools and lawnmowers, but I couldn’t prove anything and, besides, I liked the custodian.\u00a0 He was a hard-working “hillbilly”\u2014 his term by the way.<\/p>\n I was his “little bitty buddy” \u2014 and his kids were crooks.\u00a0 They took the master key and broke into an apartment across the hall.<\/p>\n Then they committed a botched burglary down the street and confessed to that, plus my break-in.<\/p>\n My custodian and his family had to<\/strong><\/span> move out.\u00a0 “See you in the funny papers.”\u00a0 That was my custodian’s sign-off.\u00a0 Six years with me, then bye <\/em>because his kids were crooks.<\/p>\n “I’m getting better by the numbers.” \u00a0He said that too. \u00a0I never did figure that one out.<\/p>\n Twenty-four years later: A different custodian, Speedy: the hardest working man on earth.\u00a0 Speedy climbed many a ledge and ladder for me \u2014 and upped my workers’ comp.\u00a0 He fell off a lot of ladders.\u00a0 And he had some crook relatives and friends.<\/p>\n One relative, his so-called niece, was a prostitute.\u00a0 The niece took the master key and entered a neighboring apartment and stole the tenant’s checkbook, ID and ring.<\/p>\n At first I thought the burglar was Speedy’s<\/strong><\/span> “nephew” Dave, a felon.\u00a0\u00a0 But then my plumber\u00a0 reported seeing a new woman around, Amber, sleeping on Speedy’s couch.\u00a0 “A black guy is pimping her,” the plumber said.<\/p>\n I told the police about Amber.\u00a0 The detective said, “Amber Carney.*\u00a0 She’s a known druggie and thief.” [*Not her real last name but close enough.]<\/p>\n Amber, the “niece,” got caught at the bank, forging checks.<\/p>\n The victim \u2014 my tenant\u2014was more upset about the stolen ring than the stolen money.\u00a0 She said it was an Irish ring.\u00a0 It was fenced.\u00a0 It was gone.\u00a0 She asked if I was Irish.<\/p>\n “No, I’m Jewish,” I said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n “Funny, I’m Palestinian,” she said.<\/p>\n No problem\u2014 for her. \u00a0\u00a0She was, as my father used to say, one cool customer. Most females would have been out of that burglarized apartment in a day.\u00a0 I changed the lock and she stayed another year, pressing charges against the whore.<\/p>\n Amber, the prostitute, went to jail.\u00a0 Speedy moved out and took a job at an adult bookstore.\u00a0 I know because I received updates about Speedy’s employment through his workers’ comp lawyer, who kept sending me claims \u2014 for years\u2014 about Speedy falling off ladders back in the day.
