How did you start Yiddishe Cup?<\/em><\/p>\n

I got a gig, which other musicians wanted in on.<\/p>\n

I made $10 on the gig, and paid the other guys $60 each.\u00a0 We played for the Russian immigrants’ club at the\u00a0 Mayfield Road JCC. The Russians liked our waltzes.\u00a0 Screw klezmer.\u00a0 I hired two musicians who had played with the Kleveland Klezmorim, and a Swiss jazz bass player.<\/p>\n

\"larry-ross-1\"On our next<\/strong><\/span> gig, I lost money. I used a black jazz guitarist.\u00a0 All his Dm chords came out like Dm7’s (jazz chords). His name was Jewish, though:
\nLarry Ross.<\/p>\n

How did you get your first gig?<\/em><\/p>\n

We played for free on John Carroll University’s Jewish hour.\u00a0 The radio show’s host — a cantor, my<\/em> cantor — couldn’t easily turn down a fellow congregant. Also, he often requested Jewish musicians stop by John Carroll to play on his show, and few did.\u00a0 (John Carroll is a Jesuit school. \u00a0Does Yeshiva University have a Celtic hour?)<\/p>\n

The Yiddishe Cup radio gig impressed our first paying client.<\/p>\n
