We will celebrate the Cleveland klezmer sound.\u00a0 Legend has it, this sound came together at I-271 and Chagrin Boulevard, to become one of the most combustible klezmer sounds the world has ever seen.\u00a0 \"alices-restaurants\"Alice Stratton (n\u00e9e Shustick), author of Alice’s Restaurants<\/em> (1981), will share her recipes and Cleveland food discoveries. This could be an amazing Cleveland klezmer meal.<\/p>\n

Alan Douglass<\/a> — an original member of both the Kleveland Klezmorim and Yiddishe Cup — talks about his life as Klezmer Goy.\u00a0 He’ll recite the bruchas <\/em>(blessings) over both the <\/em>wine and cheese to show he knows some Hebrew (like Italians on the Lower East Side used to know a bisl<\/em> Yiddish).<\/p>\n

The meal: rugelach<\/em>, mandelbroit<\/em>, hamentashen,<\/em> honey cake and Cinnebuns.<\/p>\n

5\/3 \u00a0Fear in Loadin’<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Irwin Weinberger<\/a>, Mr. Jewish Music Ohio, talks about eating at gigs. \u00a0He shows how a pro musician loads a plate.\u00a0\"eating-utensils\" Trick number one: Put lettuce on top of everything, so the host thinks you’re eating only salad.<\/p>\n

The meal: tschav<\/em> (cream of sorrel soup), creamed herring on shmura<\/em> (handmade) matzo, turkey pot pie, and a wedding cake made from real butter, real vanilla extract and real waiter’s eggs.<\/p>\n

6\/13\u00a0 Die Kleveland<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Greg Selker<\/a>, founder of the Kleveland Klezmorim, speaks about the early days of the group. \u00a0He’ll show 1985 videos from Booksellers, Pavilion Mall, Beachwood, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Jack Stratton<\/a>, Yiddishe Cup’s alternate drummer, demonstrates the Jewish rhythm method.\u00a0 Think “in the pocket.” In the groove.\u00a0 Be down with the knish, the Jewish pie. Wear one on shabbes<\/em>.\u00a0 Also, be down with the empanada pie (Latin music).\u00a0 And appreciate the pasty, the miner’s pie from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.\u00a0 It’s all music.<\/p>\n

The meal: cold borscht, tsimmes <\/em>(fruit stew), Mr. Brisket soaked in Coke, albondigas<\/em> (Sephardic meatballs) and butter kuchen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

8\/15\u00a0 The Happy Bagel<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Ducoff<\/a>, a.k.a. Sir Dancelot, talks about happy times — how to make money from dancing at bar mitzvah parties and weddings. \u00a0Ducoff shows us the Happy Bagel, his latest dance.\u00a0 And we eat bagels.\u00a0\"happy-bagel\" Not hole-less, soulless bagels. We’ll munch authentic Chew-ish <\/em>bagels (crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside) with holes big enough to stick shabbes <\/em>candles in and light.<\/p>\n

The meal: Tractor-size bagels from Russia; chicken liver with gribens<\/em> (cracklings); and fruit tarts.<\/p>\n

9\/16\u00a0 The Crazy Mom<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The late Barbara Shlensky, party planner, talks about the “Crazy Mom” phenomenon. \u00a0How much Valium is too much for Mom’s cocktail?\u00a0 What if Mom jumps on the bandstand and screams, “Stop right now!\u00a0 The floor is collapsing!”\u00a0\"valium\" What about Mom’s 45-minute cocktail hour that runs two hours, and the now-drunk guests are accidentally breaking wine glasses and dripping blood onto the white vinyl dance floor?\u00a0 Finally, has there ever been a $100,000 bar mitzvah party in Cleveland?\u00a0 Whose?\u00a0 Barbara answers that.<\/p>\n
