He said, \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure this is cancer. Basel cell carcinoma. If it\u2019s benign, we won\u2019t call you back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks passed. No call back. Good. Nevertheless, I told Alice, \u201cMaybe I should call the doctor. He said he was pretty sure it was cancerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called. The skin doctor\u2019s receptionist put me on hold for five minutes. Then a nurse said, \u201cWe\u2019re waiting for a fax.\u201d I waited a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor got on the line: \u201cI have to apologize. We are using a new lab, and they failed to send a report to us. I take the blame. I should have followed up. It\u2019s basil cell carcinoma, just like I expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skin cancer. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">I hate<\/span> that &#8212; when you beg for a diagnosis and get a bad one. Suddenly my world revolved around appointments and follow-ups. I went to a specialist who did Mohs surgery &#8212; deep-dish nose drilling.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>What if<\/strong><\/span> I hadn\u2019t called the dermatologist?
