That&#8217;s a niche &#8212; weddings of women rabbis &#8212; that Yiddishe Cup has cornered in the Midwest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2957\" title=\"bubby1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bubby1-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"bubby1\" width=\"280\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bubby1-280x300.jpg 280w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bubby1.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>The most <em>heymish<\/em> lids are grandmas&#8217; knitted yarmulkes.<\/p>\n<p>My blue suede yarmulkes are from A-1 Skull Caps.\u00a0 The lids don&#8217;t breathe.\u00a0 <em>Skull<\/em> cap. I like a yarmulke that breathes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Camouflage <em>kippahs<\/em><\/strong><\/span> exist, too.\u00a0 One Yiddishe Cup musician, a pacifist, declined to wear his camo lid at a <em>Zahal<\/em>-themed bar mitzvah. \u00a0<em>Zahal<\/em> is the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).\u00a0 The bar mitzvah boy&#8217;s father wore combat boots and a full Israeli uniform.\u00a0 The band wore IDF T-shirts and camouflage yarmulkes.\u00a0 (Nobody noticed our musician in street clothes.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2958\" title=\"beathing-yarmulke1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/beathing-yarmulke1-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"beathing-yarmulke1\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/beathing-yarmulke1-300x257.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/beathing-yarmulke1.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I have six purple <em>kippot<\/em> from a bar mitzvah.\u00a0 I thought the band might want to wear the lids again at another bar mitzvah.\u00a0 Go for the clean David Clark Five look.\u00a0 The guys declined.<\/p>\n<p>We wore sports yarmulkes &#8212; plus basketball jerseys &#8212; at a sports-themed bar mitzvah party. \u00a0The party even had a cheerleading squad:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mazel tov \/ Let&#8217;s shout hurray \/ It&#8217;s Jeremy and Sam&#8217;s bar mitzvah day!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I say <em>oy<\/em> \/ You say <em>vey<\/em> \/ Jeremy and Sam are men today!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2954\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"cheerleaders-ducoff-twins\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cheerleaders-ducoff-twins-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"cheerleaders-ducoff-twins\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cheerleaders-ducoff-twins-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cheerleaders-ducoff-twins-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cheerleaders-ducoff-twins.jpg 1798w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s keyboard player, <\/strong><\/span>Alan Douglass, frequently asks, &#8220;Is this a yarmulke gig?&#8221;\u00a0 He&#8217;s a <em>goy<\/em> and can&#8217;t figure out what&#8217;s up with the various Jewish denominations.<\/p>\n<p>My Conservative rabbi wears a throwaway satin lid that funeral homes and synagogues give out.\u00a0 He apparently doesn&#8217;t want to look different from his congregants. I haven&#8217;t asked yet &#8212; after 20 years &#8212; why he wears the throwaway.<\/p>\n<p>My white satin yarmulke from Dec. 9, 2007 has &#8220;Ananth Uggirala&#8221; &#8212; the groom&#8217;s name &#8212; in it. The groom&#8217;s parents were Anjaneyulu and Manorama Uggirala.\u00a0 I had to announce them.\u00a0 Tip, please.<\/p>\n<p>You need good hair clips for a yarmulke.\u00a0 Bobby pins are the worst; they take your hair out with the yarmulke.\u00a0 Duck bill clips &#8211; also no good.\u00a0 The best clips are the surfboard barrettes.\u00a0 \u00a0If you don&#8217;t have these clips, get some, particularly for outdoor gigs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>If you drop a yarmulke, <\/strong><\/span>you don&#8217;t have to kiss it before putting it back on.\u00a0 A lid is a lid.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a holy object.\u00a0 Also, <em>goys<\/em>,<em> <\/em>wear the lid at the wedding ceremony; you&#8217;re not exempt.<\/p>\n<p>At an American-Israeli wedding, one of the <em>chuppah<\/em> (bridal canopy) bearers smoked and balanced a drink.\u00a0 His yarmulke fell off.\u00a0 Secular Israelis, they&#8217;re funny that way.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s shocking when you see an Orthodox guy <em>without<\/em> a lid.\u00a0 For instance, an Orthodox man might go into a non-kosher restaurant on a road trip and take his yarmulke off.\u00a0 (Some Orthodox, when in the sticks, will go to a fast-food place for a salad.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>I wore a yarmulke<\/strong><\/span> for a week when I hitchhiked the coast of California in my twenties.\u00a0 I had seen a photo of Bob Dylan wearing a yarmulke at the Western Wall.\u00a0 Dylan did yahm-ops at The Wall every couple decades, it seemed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2960\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"yarmulke-best-photo2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/yarmulke-best-photo2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"yarmulke-best-photo2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/yarmulke-best-photo2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/yarmulke-best-photo2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/yarmulke-best-photo2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My Easter basket of yahms makes for a moderately interesting pop-psych experiment on <em>shabbes<\/em>: Who is going to take the pink, who is going to take the matzo-textured lid, and who is going to hide behind the black lid?<\/p>\n<p>Have fun with lids.\u00a0 That&#8217;s in the Torah somewhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe a collage artist can do something with my yarmulke collection, from 22 years&#8217; worth of gigs.\u00a0 I know an artist &#8212; a bad one &#8212; who did something with old saxophone reeds.
