I didn\u2019t like the work. My mother would call from Boca Raton and say, \u201cEdith was such a good friend of ours. Please go, son.\u201d Screw Edith.<\/p>\n<p>But I went. The hardest part was the walk from my car to the shiva house. I always imagined the homeowner would open the door and say: \u201cWe don\u2019t want any! Who are you? Have you no decency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It never happened that way. I was often the youngest non-relative\u00a0at the shiva. I eavesdropped a lot because I didn&#8217;t know anybody. An old woman said, \u201cWhen I feel sick, I want to die. Then I get better and want to live.\u201d OK with me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>A rabbi<\/strong> <\/span>talked about the Cleveland Browns a lot. Rabbis usually weren&#8217;t sports nuts back then, but this rav was young and a major Browns fan. A food broker said to me, \u201cI sell Heinen\u2019s.\u201d What was I selling? Not sure.<\/p>\n<p>My parents made me do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<br \/>\n<small>Footnote:<br \/>\nWhile shiva repping, I met a\u00a0 California man who produced Joel Grey\u2019s shows for 27 years. I said, \u201cI\u2019ll send you my band\u2019s CD and you can show it to Joel. Wait, I <em>won\u2019t<\/em> send it. Joel might sue me for ripping off Mickey Katz tunes.&#8221;<\/small><\/p>\n<p><small>\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d the producer said. \u201cLebedeff\u2019s people tried to hit Joel up for royalties on \u2018Romania, Romania\u2019 for years.
