{"id":272,"date":"2009-06-03T07:53:09","date_gmt":"2009-06-03T11:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/?p=272"},"modified":"2012-03-26T17:34:30","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T21:34:30","slug":"the-yiddishe-cup-fight-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/03\/the-yiddishe-cup-fight-song\/","title":{"rendered":"THE YIDDISHE CUP FIGHT SONG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s singer, Irwin Weinberger, <\/strong><\/span>wrote a sweetly nostalgic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fNBCuaFn9Ag&amp;feature=channel_page\">song<\/a> about attending baseball games with his father, who was a Holocaust survivor.\u00a0 Irwin even mentioned The Rock in the song: Rocky Colavito.\u00a0 (Next up, a song about Harvey Kuenn for the Detroit market.)<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays Irwin is laissez-faire on sports \u2014 unless the Indians get hot again.<\/p>\n<p>Guys are supposed to talk about sports, and drink when they get together.\u00a0 I know this isn&#8217;t always a fact.\u00a0 One Yiddishe Cup musician calls sports a &#8220;cult.&#8221; \u00a0This musician is proud he doesn&#8217;t know a thing about pro sports.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>The whole town went ape-wire <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">over the Cleveland Cavaliers.<\/span><\/span> He didn&#8217;t care.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the other guys did.<\/p>\n<p>The previous time Yiddishe Cup was sports batty was 1997, when the Indians were in the World Series, and Yiddishe Cup was playing Simchat Torah gigs.\u00a0 (<em>Goys<\/em>: Simchat Torah is right after Succot.)\u00a0 We hid in the temple&#8217;s cloak room and caught bits of the action on a small portable TV.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup is not sports adverse. <\/strong><\/span>Yiddishe Cup plays a variety of fight songs, including The Yiddishe Cup Fight Song, which is a major-key <em>freylekhs<\/em> (hora) interspersed with the verbal chants of \u00a0&#8220;Go Cup Go&#8221; and\u00a0 &#8220;De-feat Maxwell Street.&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezmerband.com\">Maxwell Street<\/a>, from Chicago, is our archrival. \u00a0They probably don&#8217;t know that.<\/p>\n<p>Here are other fight songs you need to know in our part of the Midwest:<\/p>\n<p>1. Ohio State.\u00a0 Use &#8220;Hang On Sloopy&#8221; or &#8220;Fight The Team Across the Field.&#8221;\u00a0 Sometimes we hold off on &#8220;Hang On Sloopy&#8221; until the Buckeyes score.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the protocol. \u00a0Be aware of this if a guest is listening to the game at a gig.\u00a0 If you play &#8220;Hang on Sloopy&#8221; before the Bucks score, it&#8217;s bad luck.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>2. Michigan&#8217;s &#8220;The Victors&#8221; is a biggie. <\/strong><\/span>This tune is one of the most insipid tunes of all time.\u00a0 Or greatest \u2014 depending.<\/p>\n<p>Other requests: Michigan  State, &#8220;On Wisconsin,&#8221; and the Pitt fight song, which is not the same as the Steelers&#8217; song.<\/p>\n<p>Forget about Notre Dame unless they get a Jewish quarterback again.<\/p>\n<p>Be flexible.\u00a0 For instance, Yiddishe Cup knows &#8220;Are You From Wooster?&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><em>If you&#8217;re from Oberlin or <\/em><em>Denison<\/em><em> or <\/em><em>Wesleyan<\/em><em> <\/em><em>U.<\/em><em>,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Scots will take good care of you before they&#8217;re through.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Wooster has many international students<\/strong><\/span> and a lively Hillel.\u00a0 Check out The COW (The College of Wooster) with your 16 year old.\u00a0 Great school. \u00a0Yiddishe Cup has played there a half dozen times.<\/p>\n<p>Another good, small Ohio school is Kenyon, which Yiddishe Cup has played a few times.\u00a0 \u00a0Kenyon has a Medieval dining hall out of Hogwarts.\u00a0 The school&#8217;s swim team dines there wearing big purple capes and eats tons of priceless food.\u00a0 Swipe that college ID card.\u00a0 Free food to students, $50,000 to Dad and Mom.<br \/>\n&#8212;-<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">Tomorrow:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">DOUBLE PORTION OF MANNA . . .
