When I<\/strong><\/span> arrived at my nursing-home gig, I noticed a 15-piece big band setting up next to me. I said to the nursing-home coordinator, \u201cI don\u2019t appreciate a 15-piece band playing 15 feet from me.\u201d (The band was TOPS — Tough Old Pros.) These guys were stealing my turf!<\/p>\n The big boss — a programming director — came up to me and said, \u201cI hear you have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n “I don\u2019t<\/strong> <\/span>appreciate a 15-piece band playing 15 feet from me,” I said. [The TOPS band was about 100 feet away.]<\/p>\n She said, \u201cI hear you’re getting into it with my co-worker.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t swear at her. I didn\u2019t say anything disrespectful. I did have an edge to my voice — like I do now. What did she say I said?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe said you said you don\u2019t appreciate playing fifteen feet from a 15-piece band.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat’s right! What\u2019s wrong with saying that? Are you doubling down on this?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have six buildings on this campus and many musical acts and there can be conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cA<\/strong> 15-piece<\/strong><\/span> band!\u201d This was an ego thing for me, in case you haven’t guessed. \u201cMaybe I\u2019ll leave,” I said.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t. I like playing for senior citizens.
