Sid talked to me.\u00a0Big deal?\u00a0Yes. Sid was paid staff, and I was just a paying student. Staff had a lot of demands on their time.<\/p>\n<p>Sid had no ego. Sid was \u201cdiscovered\u201d by klez revivalists and made his first record at age 70. (He died in 2007 at 88.) Sid had a proprietary book of his own tunes. The book was nicknamed \u201cthe sheets,\u201d short for \u201csheet music.\u201d Sid\u2019s sheets were guarded &#8212; quarantined &#8212; by pianist <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pete Sokolow<\/span>, who had transcribed the tunes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26495\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26495\" class=\"wp-image-26495 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/side-beckerman-1998-photo-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sid Beckerman 1998\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/side-beckerman-1998-photo-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/side-beckerman-1998-photo.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sid Beckerman 1998<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I wanted a copy of the sheets, so I gave Pete a xerox of a 1938 magazine article about \u201cBay Mir Bistu Sheyn,\u201d hoping to get in Pete&#8217;s good graces. Pete was not impressed. He said, \u201cThe <em>sheets<\/em>? What sheets?\u00a0I\u2019m so busy.\u00a0I\u2019m working up an arrangement for fifteen people.\u00a0What did Sid say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sid said, \u201c<em>What<\/em> transcriptions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I offered Sid $20 for the sheets, which he turned down.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>A year<\/strong><\/span> later, 1991, the sheets came out as the <em>Klezmer Plus! Folio<\/em><em> <\/em>by Tara Publications. Everybody could now buy the sheets.
