The building manager\u2019s adult kids pilfered tools and lawnmowers, but I couldn\u2019t prove anything, and, besides, I liked the building manager. He was a hard-working \u201chillbilly\u201d\u2014 his term. I was his \u201clittle bitty buddy\u201d &#8212; his term again. His kids took the master key and broke into an apartment. They also committed a botched burglary down the street and got caught. They confessed to that, plus the break-in at my place. My building manager and his family had to move out.\u00a0\u201cSee you in the funny papers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Years later I hired another manager, Speedy, who also had crook relatives. His \u201cniece\u201d was a prostitute.\u00a0She took the master key and entered an apartment and stole a tenant\u2019s checkbook, ID and ring. \u00a0The \u201cniece,\u201d Amber, slept on Speedy\u2019s couch.\u00a0My plumber said, \u201cA black guy is pimping her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told the police about Amber, and the detective said, \u201cAmber Carney. She\u2019s a known druggie and thief.\u201d Amber\u2019s victim \u2014 my tenant\u2014said the stolen ring was an Irish ring. Whatever that meant.\u00a0The ring was fenced and gone. The tenant asked if I was Irish.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u201cI\u2019m Jewish,\u201d<\/span> <\/strong>I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Palestinian,\u201d she said. OK. I had the locked changed, and she stayed another year, pressing charges against the whore.
