Mr. Cleveland,<\/strong><\/span> a tenant, said he had bedbugs and couldn\u2019t sleep at night. The exterminator sprayed Mr. Cleveland’s apartment and set up insect monitors \u2013 sticky paper. In a few days, the exterminator had found one spider, a flea, a nymph, and no bedbugs.<\/p>\n

I told Mr.Cleveland, but he was not placated. I said, \u201cYou want out of the lease? Because if you do, you can move.\u201d (I didn\u2019t want a complainer.) He said he wanted to stay. He said he had a used mattress and bed spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat! “I said. “Don\u2019t you read the papers or watch TV?\u201d<\/p>\n

He bought<\/strong><\/span> a new mattress and bed spring. And then saw a new bug on his insect monitor.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet over it,” I said. “You have a bug. So do I. So does everybody else, except maybe the ER at the Cleveland Clinic, which they scrub every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGet over it<\/em> sounds condescending,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet over<\/strong><\/span> it! Do you want me to send the exterminator again — a third time — for a bug? You have a bug<\/em> in your apartment. I have a bug<\/em> in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are very condescending.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have bedbugs. You don\u2019t have cockroaches. We\u2019re crazy to be talking about this \u2013 a<\/em> bug<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I<\/strong> <\/span>move out?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, that deal is off. That was before I spent $205 on exterminators, with another $100 coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n
