One day you’re a real estate slumlord, <\/strong><\/span>and the next you’re signing autographs at a concert.\u00a0 The first time I signed an autograph, I couldn’t fathom it.\u00a0 I am not Bob Feller.<\/p>\n

About 10 percent of CD-buyers want your autograph.<\/p>\n

They are the well-wishers after the gig.\u00a0 “Great concert” is the standard greeting.\u00a0 Some of these people try to hog the musicians’ time with stories about their grandkids’ clarinet playing, or their memories of Mickey Katz<\/a> – which is actually interesting.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I’m<\/em> the autograph hound.<\/strong><\/span> I was talking to Josh Dolgin (Socalled)<\/a> of Klezmer Madness<\/a> after a concert \u2014 and I know the guy, I mean he has stayed at my house \u2014 when a concertgoer cut in front of me and started flashing his business card, and I backed off.\u00a0 I was looking forward to going out for a drink with Dolgin maybe.\u00a0 Who knows.\u00a0 Maybe David Krakauer<\/a>, the star of the show, would have come along.<\/p>\n

Instead I went to a coffeehouse<\/span> <\/strong><\/span>with Irwin Weinberger,<\/a> Yiddishe Cup’s guitar player, \u00a0and we rehashed the Klezmer Madness show.\u00a0 We decided Krakauer was a clarinet player beyond belief, but 90 minutes of non-stop clarinet \u2014 no matter how good \u2014 was too long.<\/p>\n

Keep it 30 minutes or under.\u00a0 We’re in a hurry.\u00a0 We grew up on Sesame Street<\/em>.\u00a0 (Howdy Doody<\/em> in my case.)<\/p>\n
