1. JERUSALEM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup’s dance leader, Daniel Ducoff, flies frequently for his day job as \u00a0university fundraiser. \u00a0He knows which security lines are fastest. Even if he’s flying Continental, he’ll often switch to the quicker Southwest line at Cleveland airport.<\/p>\n

Man against the machine . . .<\/p>\n

My Uncle Al griped about tour bus drivers in Israel who turned the air conditioning too high.<\/p>\n

My parents had<\/strong><\/span> travel stories about drunken Russians on cruise ships. And I heard about haggling for a gold wine bottle in Italy. I saw the slides.<\/p>\n

I threw out the slides.\u00a0 I have one left: \u00a0my parents at The Wall in Jerusalem. \u00a0My dad had on Jack Purcells.\u00a0 He was always in a hurry.<\/p>\n

My dad kept <\/strong><\/span>a list of his purchases abroad. Here it is, abbreviated:<\/p>\n

\nBrass circular dish. Morocco
\nWool flokati rug. Athens<\/p>\n

My parents didn’t buy all that much.\u00a0 No jewelry and not much clothes. \u00a0My dad left me plenty, but very little clothing. I’m not complaining.\u00a0 I got\u00a0 buildings.<\/p>\n

2. KENTUCKY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Ducoff — Yiddishe Cup’s Sir Dance-a-lot — collects refrigerator magnets of states Yiddishe Cup has played.\u00a0 Sometimes I give Daniel magnet investment advice.\u00a0 For instance, 10 years ago I told him to buy “Kentucky.”<\/p>\n

It was getting on my nerves — not playing Kentucky. \u00a0Kentucky is ridiculously, abuttingly close, to Ohio.<\/p>\n

The conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra has played in 10 foreign countries and 29 states.\u00a0 Who’s counting.<\/p>\n

Next month Yiddishe Cup <\/strong><\/span>plays Connecticut — a state which isn’t even on our screen. \u00a0Is Connecticut a legitimate state?\u00a0 Does it have a state bird? Connecticut seems more a township or shire than a state.<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup has played Ohio, Indiana, New York, Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania,\u00a0Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Florida, Canada and, shortly, Connecticut.<\/p>\n

Connecticut but no Kentucky. \u00a0Why?<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup plays in Lakeville, Conn., on 10\/10\/10 for a wedding. Klezmer bandleaders from the Northeast will not be happy to read this.<\/p>\n

Or maybe they won’t care. \u00a0Maybe they’ll all be in Kentucky that day.<\/p>\n

3. NORTH CAROLINA HAIKU<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Greensboro Furniture Mart
\nconvention
\nis happening.<\/p>\n

No beds except at the seedy hotel
\nacross from the Executive Club
\nwhich in Cleveland is a catering hall
\nbut in NC is a strip joint<\/p>\n

Are we in Amsterdam?<\/p>\n

Continental breakfast
\nThe Corn Flakes in the Styrofoam bowl
\nneed milk
\nfor weight
\nfast
\nToo late
\nWhere’s the broom?<\/p>\n

Musicians with instruments
\nat the Delta counter
\n“Our gig was colder than an MF,” their drummer says
\n“You played outside<\/em>?” our singer says
\nThe Neville Brothers’ drummer
\nEven the big boys freeze their pupiks<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\n
