JERUSALEM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s dance leader, Daniel Ducoff, flies frequently for his day job as \u00a0university fundraiser. \u00a0He knows which security lines are fastest. Even if he&#8217;s flying Continental, he&#8217;ll often switch to the quicker Southwest line at Cleveland airport.<\/p>\n<p>Man against the machine . . .<\/p>\n<p>My Uncle Al griped about tour bus drivers in Israel who turned the air conditioning too high.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>My parents had<\/strong><\/span> travel stories about drunken Russians on cruise ships. And I heard about haggling for a gold wine bottle in Italy. Here it is, abbreviated:<\/p>\n<p>Rosewood carving of temple dog. Bangkok<br \/>\nCeramic bells. Israel<br \/>\nPorcelain-in-pewter bowl. Hong Kong<br \/>\nBrass circular dish. Morocco<br \/>\nWool flokati rug. Athens<\/p>\n<p>My parents didn&#8217;t buy all that much.\u00a0 No jewelry and not much clothes. \u00a0My dad left me plenty, but very little clothing.  I&#8217;m not complaining.\u00a0 I got\u00a0 buildings.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>2. KENTUCKY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daniel Ducoff &#8212; Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s Sir Dance-a-lot &#8212; collects refrigerator magnets of states Yiddishe Cup has played.\u00a0 Sometimes I give Daniel magnet investment advice.\u00a0 For instance, 10 years ago I told him to buy &#8220;Kentucky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was getting on my nerves &#8212; not playing Kentucky. \u00a0Kentucky is ridiculously, abuttingly close, to Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>The conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra has played in 10 foreign countries and 29 states.\u00a0 Who&#8217;s counting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Next month Yiddishe Cup <\/strong><\/span>plays Connecticut &#8212; a state which isn&#8217;t even on our screen. \u00a0Is Connecticut a legitimate state?\u00a0 Does it have a state bird?  Connecticut seems more a township or shire than a state.<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup has played Ohio, Indiana, New York, Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania,\u00a0Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Florida, Canada and, shortly, Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut but no Kentucky. \u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup plays in Lakeville, Conn., on 10\/10\/10 for a wedding. Klezmer bandleaders from the Northeast will not be happy to read this.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe they won&#8217;t care. \u00a0Maybe they&#8217;ll all be in Kentucky that day.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>3. NORTH CAROLINA HAIKU<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Greensboro Furniture Mart<br \/>\nconvention<br \/>\nis happening.<\/p>\n<p>No beds except at the seedy hotel<br \/>\nacross from the Executive Club<br \/>\nwhich in Cleveland is a catering hall<br \/>\nbut in NC is a strip joint<\/p>\n<p>Are we in Amsterdam?<\/p>\n<p>Continental breakfast<br \/>\nThe Corn Flakes in the Styrofoam bowl<br \/>\nneed milk<br \/>\nfor weight<br \/>\nfast<br \/>\nToo late<br \/>\nWhere&#8217;s the broom?<\/p>\n<p>Musicians with instruments<br \/>\nat the Delta counter<br \/>\n&#8220;Our gig was colder than an MF,&#8221; their drummer says<br \/>\n&#8220;You played <em>outside<\/em>?&#8221; our singer says<br \/>\nThe Neville Brothers&#8217; drummer<br \/>\nEven the big boys freeze their <em>pupiks<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">1 of 2 posts for 9\/29\/10.\u00a0 Please see the post below too.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
