And as the rabbi danced . . .<\/strong><\/span> not always. \u00a0\u00a0(That’s a song lyric: “And as the rabbi danced . . .”)<\/p>\n

And if the rabbi dances, the congregants will. \u00a0\u00a0If he doesn’t dance, nobody dances.<\/p>\n

At a private party \u2014 bar mitzvah or wedding \u2014 if the immediate family doesn’t dance, nobody dances.<\/p>\n

We have our trade secrets \u2014 ways to motivate people to dance, though.\u00a0 We play Fiddler on<\/em> the Roof<\/em> music; the guests stand up, sway side to side, link arms; and then we speed up the music.\u00a0 And we have a shtickmeister<\/em>, dance leader Daniel Ducoff<\/a> , also known as Sir Dance-a-lot.\u00a0 \u00a0(He goes by many names. He also has a variety of business cards and eyeglass frames.)<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup was possibly the first<\/strong><\/span> klezmer band to have a dedicated dance leader. \u00a0Daniel plays the duck whistle and that’s about it.\u00a0 He dances.<\/p>\n

Daniel leads a lot of \u00a0wild-and-crazy dance sets.<\/p>\n

It’s not hard. We run into people who are in good moods.<\/p>\n

Then again, in the band biz, the party always ends.\u00a0 And I’m reduced to discussing fender dents with the band’s van rental guy.\u00a0 Daily slice-of-life stuff.\u00a0 Not all glamour.<\/p>\n

The glamour . . . I tell locals <\/strong><\/span>we play out of town.\u00a0 Oh really?\u00a0 You mean you go to <\/em>Columbus<\/em>?<\/em> Yes . . . and Texas and Florida and New York City. \u00a0\u00a0Some day, kayn eyn-ore <\/em>(no evil eye), we’ll play Australia.\u00a0 And don’t forget we’ve played Canada.\u00a0 The internationally acclaimed Yiddishe Cup.<\/p>\n
