I have the <em>shul <\/em>almost to myself. \u00a0The upside: no annoying people.<\/p>\n<p>However, this plan defeats one of the purposes of the High Holidays&#8211; hanging out with large numbers of <em>Yidn.<\/em> My rabbi says if you attend the real High Holidays&#8211; and <em>shul <\/em>in general&#8211; you&#8217;ll feel less lonely.<\/p>\n<p>I sometimes get agitated on Rosh Hashanah morning because there is so much commotion and noise in the <em>shul<\/em>.\u00a0 Then the rabbi sermonizes about loneliness and community, saying, &#8220;Hell is other people according to Sartre, but what&#8217;s the alternative&#8211; sitting at home in your underwear watching reruns?&#8221;\u00a0 Point taken.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>In the sanctuary, <\/strong><\/span>I see a doc who gave me a colonoscopy.\u00a0 I see, several rows over, a PhD scientist who is so anti-religious his seat needs an ejection button; his wife forced him to come.\u00a0 The guy next to me, a real estate broker, says, &#8220;How&#8217;s occupancies?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Commercial, bad.\u00a0 Residential, OK,&#8221; I say. \u00a0I don&#8217;t mind some biz talk on <em>yuntif.<\/em> No big deal.<\/p>\n<p>I see a weight-loss doc in the loges (the elevated seating around the perimeter of the sanctuary). Her picture is occasionally in the Cleveland <em>Plain Dealer<\/em> next to the word &#8220;obesity.&#8221; \u00a0\u00a0She&#8217;s in excellent shape.<\/p>\n<p>A Jew visiting from New York gives me greetings from a New Rochelle cousin.\u00a0 Nice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>A couple people<\/strong><\/span> say hi to me because of the band.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know their names.<\/p>\n<p>After services, a worshipper asks if I remember him.
