The<\/strong> boiler<\/strong> <\/span>died at a building I own.\u00a0 I called the repair company, D.B. Johnsen Co., who said try somebody else.\u00a0 Stack Heating & Cooling came out. Stack was no bargain. Stack was like going to 10 dentists.<\/p>\n

Then I had a second boiler go bad, down the street.\u00a0 Stack’s proposal on boiler #2 was $5950 for two sections of new boiler, to replace a corner that had corroded. I was thinking zero for that corner, Stack.\u00a0 The boiler had worked perfectly well a few minutes ago.\u00a0 Now it was cracked.\u00a0 I had budgeted zero for #2.\u00a0 I had put everything into boiler #1.\u00a0 I called a couple guys for quotes.\u00a0 They were all busy.\u00a0 Stack himself was very busy.\u00a0 It was cold out.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019m getting too old for this shit.\u201d So was I.\u00a0 (Stack and I are the same age).<\/p>\n

Madison Plumbing did the job and screwed up. It cost me a few grand extra.<\/p>\n

Then a <\/strong><\/span>third boiler went down.\u00a0 This was a couple months later.\u00a0 Stack said, \u201cI want to prepare you. Eleven burners are shot. That boiler is older than me. \u201d Again with the age, Stack?\u00a0 This boiler was carboning up and sooty.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll try to save it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo that,\u201d I said. \u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stack called again:\u00a0\u201cI have bad news.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I asked him to knock $500 off the price if I didn’t get a second quote.\u00a0 Agreed.\u00a0 I wrote the tenants they could buy a space heater at Home Depot and take $50 off their rent until the heat went on.\u00a0 I recommended a Polonis convection oil-filled space heater. About a third of the tenants opted for the free space heater. One tenant even added $37 for a comforter.<\/p>\n

My bill:<\/strong><\/span> $38,350 (boiler #3).\u00a0 Stacked against me.<\/p>\n
