A HARD RAIN&#8217;S A-GONNA MAYBE FALL<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s keyboard player doesn&#8217;t like to play in direct sunlight.\u00a0 He wants our contract to say &#8220;We will not play in direct sunlight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I ignore him.\u00a0 At summer concerts, I try to set up outside.\u00a0 This has cost the band one loudspeaker, damaged by heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup has played on the Wiley Middle School lawn, University Heights, Ohio, for 16 years and has moved inside the school three times.\u00a0 (Thus, there is a 19 percent chance we&#8217;ll get rained out in Cleveland on an August night.)<\/p>\n<p>At private parties, clients sometimes rent backyard tents just so they can have something extra thing to worry about &#8212; whether the tent will blow down or not.\u00a0 Some Jews will pay extra for another worry.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup played<\/strong><\/span> a tent in Dayton, Ohio, where it rained so hard, busboys poked holes in the canopy to collect rain into garbage cans.\u00a0 I thought the band might get electrocuted, the floor was so damp.<\/p>\n<p>At a Shaker Heights tent, the air was so hot and humid, my clarinet slid apart at the cork joints. \u00a0Biloxi, Miss., had nothing on Shaker that night.<\/p>\n<p>Yiddishe Cup played poolside in a Shaker backyard.\u00a0 We were like Catskill mambo kings.\u00a0 At the Akron (Ohio) JCC, we also played poolside, and the kids tried to splash us with belly slams and cannonballs. \u00a0That was Family Fun Day, a.k.a.\u00a0Let&#8217;s Destroy Professional Musical Instruments Day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup&#8217;s keyboard player<\/strong><\/span> doesn&#8217;t like it when I vacillate between indoors and outdoors.\u00a0 Mr. Keyboard Player, who are you going to trust, AccuWeather or your leader?<\/p>\n<p>I avoid indoors if possible. \u00a0Granted, outdoor sound is mediocre, but the breeze is good and the kids get to run on the grass, and summer is so brief.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer at University Heights, we moved the band&#8217;s equipment indoors at the last minute.\u00a0 The storm knocked down a chain-link fence and several trees.\u00a0 That was one of my better calls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s a video clip<\/strong><\/span> from last year&#8217;s concert.\u00a0 (The stage patter at the end of the song, at 1:58 min., is amusing.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FGnDvkn32b8?wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>2. ELI, ELI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elipaperboyreed.com\">Eli &#8220;Paperboy&#8221; Reed<\/a> played at University Heights with Yiddishe Cup the night the power went out throughout Ohio, then Michigan, Ontario, and the entire Northeast.\u00a0 Maybe Eli caused the Northeast Blackout of August 2003.\u00a0 Eli, not FirstEnergy.\u00a0 We continued the concert with a battery-powered amp.<\/p>\n<p>Eli &#8220;Paperboy&#8221; Reed doesn&#8217;t need, or probably want, a middle-aged klezmer guy saying nice things about his new album, <em>Come and Get It. <\/em>  (Klezmer Old Dude = Kiss of Death.)\u00a0 I&#8217;ll keep it low-key.  Ta-da . . .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1833\" title=\"eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it-300x299.jpg\" alt=\"eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it\" width=\"300\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it-300x299.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/eli-paperboy-reed-come-and-get-it.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Eli &#8220;Paperboy&#8221; Reed<\/strong><\/span> sings and writes original, yet classic-sounding, R&amp;B\/soul.\u00a0 No, &#8220;Eli &#8216;Paperboy&#8217; Reed&#8221; is not a pseudonym for my son the drummer.\u00a0 My son-the-drummer&#8217;s pseudonym is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.djparadiddle.com\">DJ Paradiddle.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reed, 26, is big in Europe.\u00a0 Like on <em>The<\/em> <em>Ed Sullivan Show<\/em> (the modern-day Brit equivalent) and the cover of <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> (the Brit equivalent).\u00a0 Look for <em>Come and Get It<\/em> on Capitol Records and for Eli everywhere.\u00a0 He was on NPR &#8220;Weekend Edition&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=129033427\">hear<\/a>] several days ago. \u00a0\u00a0He&#8217;ll probably be on late-night American TV soon.<\/p>\n<p>I know a couple klezmer guys who are big, too, who played with Yiddishe Cup.\u00a0 Years ago the bass player for the Klezmatics did a gig with us in Toledo.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ipso facto<\/em>, there is no such thing as &#8220;big&#8221; in klezmer.<\/p>\n<p>Eli Reed doesn&#8217;t play klezmer, though.\u00a0 When he performed with Yiddishe Cup, he did soul\/R&amp;B.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Reed and his band, <\/strong><\/span>the True Loves, have a gutsy Stax-like sound, which provides the core support to Reed&#8217;s emotive lyrics, which are rabbit punches to the solar plexus of young love. \u00a0Example: &#8220;You went from name calling to calling my name. You went from school-yard teasing to all night pleasing.&#8221;\u00a0 That is clear-cut sawing in the coming-of-age forest.<\/p>\n<p>Eli &#8212; they love him in Espa\u00f1a and France.\u00a0 I hope Eli &#8220;Paperboy&#8221; Reed becomes huge in America, and says in passing, &#8220;Yiddishe Cup is all right,&#8221; and Yiddishe Cup gets more gigs.<\/p>\n<p>When you <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/come-and-get-it\/id382874923\">buy<\/a> Eli &#8220;Paperboy&#8221; Reed&#8217;s <em>Come and Get It<\/em>, tell them &#8212; Reed, Capitol, iTunes, <em>et al.<\/em> &#8212; Yiddishe Cup sent you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">1 of 2 posts for 8\/18\/10.\u00a0 Please see the post below too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">See Yiddishe Cup 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thurs.
