The downtown<\/strong><\/span> jail has narrow windows.\u00a0 The jail, from the outside, doesn\u2019t\u00a0 even look like a jail. It looks like an office building with narrow windows.<\/p>\n

Across the street, on West 3rd Street, is a law office with a sign in the window: \u201cInmates, call collect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"I was at the county board of revision nearby, trying to get my property taxes lowered.<\/p>\n

I liked<\/strong><\/span> the downtown government scene. When I was young, I drifted in and out of trials at the Justice Center for fun.\u00a0 I liked the crying and screaming, and the lawyers picking on each other. (This was before cable and reality TV.).<\/p>\n

I would like to be a county prosecutor someday and put away bad guys, but I don\u2019t want to go to law school.<\/p>\n

I once sneaked into the jury assembly room to get a list of jurors\u2019 names for a trial. \u00a0(I was a reporter.)\u00a0 I got in some trouble with the authorities and my editor.<\/p>\n

Now I<\/strong><\/span> spend my time far away from the Justice Center. I miss the action down there.<\/p>\n

Inmates, call me collect. Not a good use of your one call, but I\u2019d like to hear from you.<\/p>\n
