Not in Chicago, thank you.\u00a0 And not in some bubble-tea town like Madison, Wisc., either.<\/p>\n<p>KlezKleveland.\u00a0 Check it out.\u00a0 This year.\u00a0 Or maybe in 2018.\u00a0 (To be announced.)<\/p>\n<p>KlezKleveland will be like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livingtraditions.org\">KlezKamp<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezkanada.org\">KlezKanada<\/a>, but with more letters and more <em>heymish &#8212; <\/em>with<em> <\/em>a Midwestern &#8220;hi!&#8221; attitude.<\/p>\n<p>Where: my house.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Accommodations: tent camping<\/strong><\/span> on my neighbor&#8217;s front lawn.\u00a0 Or you can camp inside his house.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no plumbing; his copper pipes are gone.\u00a0 Nobody lives there.<\/p>\n<p>There will be shower trucks and port-a-potties in the driveway.\u00a0 Don Johns &#8212; only the best.<\/p>\n<p>Kosher food available. (Queen Alice&#8217;s falafel truck.)<\/p>\n<p>Gentiles welcome, of course.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Do I need to <\/strong><\/span>play an instrument to attend?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, we&#8217;ll supply drumpets (combination trumpet and drums) made from leftover McDonald&#8217;s packaging.\u00a0 Drumpets, by the way, were invented by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethnomusicinc.com\/\">Dr. Craig Woodson<\/a>, a former Yiddishe Cup drummer.<\/p>\n<p><em>Do I need to know Yiddish?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, but be familiar with at least five Yiddish words besides <em>bagel, schmuck, meshuge, chutzpah <\/em>and<em> putz.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><em>Faculty?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes.\u00a0 Eco-friendly Midwestern teachers like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevengreenman.com\/\">Steven Greenman<\/a>, violin; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klezmerflute.com\/\">Adrianne Greenbaum<\/a> (originally from Akron,  Ohio), flute; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirchodosh.com\">Yosef Greenberger<\/a>, a Cleveland keyboardist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Klezmer Guy,&#8221; the KlezKleveland director, will lecture on klezmer biz &#8212; for instance, how to deal with bar mitzvah moms.\u00a0 He will participate in a mock-u-drama with a real mom, Alice Stratton . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Alice:\u00a0 I&#8217;m worried about my son&#8217;s bar mitzvah party.\u00a0 His friends, will they like klezmer?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Klezmer Guy:\u00a0 Of course they&#8217;ll like it.\u00a0 Kids love klezmer! They&#8217;re sick of rap.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>There will be daily aerobics<\/strong><\/span> and spinning sessions on the deck next door with music by KnishKnash, a NYC klez-fusion band and eatery. \u00a0Free <em>kikhl<\/em> (cookies) and wine coolers for all.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening, teens perform an experimental Yiddish-inflected drama about scrap and Midwest Jews, adapted from Leonard Tennenbaum&#8217;s memoir <em>Junk Is Not a Four-Letter Word. <\/em> The teens wear turtlenecks, Speedo trunks and Groucho glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the fencing class wear uniforms reminiscent of prewar German Jewish sports clubs.\u00a0 The outfits are black Yiddishe Cup T-shirts, provided.\u00a0 Bring your own trousers.\u00a0 White, please.\u00a0 Not cream-colored.\u00a0 White, <em> meine Herren<\/em>!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1723\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1723\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1723\" title=\"middfest-10_5_08\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/middfest-10_5_08-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"KlezKleveland fencing instructors Daniel Ducoff (L.) and Alan Douglass.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/middfest-10_5_08-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/middfest-10_5_08-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/middfest-10_5_08.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KlezKleveland fencing instructors Daniel Ducoff (L.) and Alan Douglass.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yosef Greenberger, Cleveland&#8217;s Ortho <\/strong><\/span>one-man-band keyboard wizard, will demonstrate proprietary synth settings that emit odors, such as <em>latke<\/em> smells for Chanukah songs and cinnamon for Christmas carols.
