Yiddishe Cup sidemen show up promptly<\/strong><\/span> and don’t complain. Years ago we had a player who was late all the time, and it drove me nuts.\u00a0\u00a0 My band has never been late, or missed a gig, in 20 years.\u00a0 We run like the Tokyo bullet train<\/a>.\u00a0 Next stop, Pinsk.<\/p>\n

I like to start early.\u00a0 I tell the client the band is like a taxi; the meter starts running right at the downbeat.\u00a0 That way when we quit, nobody is pissed or misled.
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes we get “undertime,” <\/strong><\/span>which means we quit early because almost everybody has gone home. \u00a0We don’t usually play for less than 10 people.\u00a0 Well, once a client made us keep playing while she wrapped up centerpieces.\u00a0 She wanted her money’s worth.<\/p>\n

Jews \u2014 or \u00a0at least this one \u2014 have a thing about 10 people.\u00a0 I won’t play till I see 10 people in a room.\u00a0 Otherwise you blow your chops out for a gaggle of teens inspecting the gift table.<\/p>\n
