These groups draw fans to local festivals, and the dancers perform in difficult odd meters. Yiddishe Cup doesn\u2019t draw many fans to these multicultural shows. Stan hired his uncle\u2019s polka band.\u00a0 At the\u00a0 wedding, we danced Slovenian-style polka &#8212; not the same as Polish-style polka.\u00a0 (If you don\u2019t know the difference, please see Harvey Pekar\u2019s \u201cPolka Wars\u201d <em>American Splendor<\/em>, issue #16.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yiddishe Cup<\/strong><\/span> can play Slovenian! Amongst themselves, Slovenians brag about their frugality, and they like to trash Lithuanians, who are even tighter.\u00a0 Stan told me all this.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Mary&#8217;s Church raffle was three years ago.\u00a0 Stan, you\u00a0owe me $23 &#8212; that&#8217;s $20 plus interest.\u00a0\u00a0 Pay up, Stan.\u00a0 Any Stan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
