Yiddishe Cup<\/strong><\/span> has shared the stage with the Hungarian Scouts, Ukrainian Kashtan dancers, and Csardas, a Hungarian troupe. These groups draw fans to local festivals, and the dancers perform in difficult odd meters. Yiddishe Cup doesn\u2019t draw many fans to these multicultural shows. The typical Jew doesn\u2019t want to watch Ukrainians, Poles, or Hungarians dance.<\/p>\n

At one festival<\/strong><\/span>, some of the folk dances had sappy English titles, like \u201cMy Little Cherry Tree\u201d and \u201cI Love You, Shepherd Boy.\u201d I took the printed program home and looked up the real titles:<\/p>\n

I bought<\/strong><\/span> a raffle ticket for the St. Mary\u2019s Church (Collinwood) fundraiser, Catholic Order of Foresters, Court #1640.<\/p>\n

I bought the ticket from Stan. Stan\u2019s father was Stan too.\u00a0\u00a0 Stan — my friend<\/em>\u00a0 Stan \u2013 got married at St. William\u2019s Church, not St. Stan\u2019s.\u00a0 (St. Stan’s church is\u00a0 Polish.\u00a0 Stan is Slovenian.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Stan\u2019s wedding reception was at the big Slovenian National Home on\u00a0 St. Clair Avenue at E. 65th Street. Stan hired his uncle\u2019s polka band.\u00a0 At the\u00a0 wedding, we danced Slovenian-style polka — not the same as Polish-style polka.\u00a0 (If you don\u2019t know the difference, please see Harvey Pekar\u2019s \u201cPolka Wars\u201d American Splendor<\/em>, issue #16.)<\/p>\n

Yiddishe Cup<\/strong><\/span> can play Slovenian! We\u2019ve done Yankovic\u2019s \u201cJust Because\u201d and \u201cBlue Skirt Waltz,\u201d and some charts from polka musician Joey Tomsick.<\/p>\n

I won $20 in the St. Mary\u2019s raffle. \u00a0I haven\u2019t seen the money yet.<\/p>\n

Slovenians are tight with a buck.\u00a0 That\u2019s their in-group reputation. Amongst themselves, Slovenians brag about their frugality, and they like to trash Lithuanians, who are even tighter.\u00a0 Stan told me all this.<\/p>\n
