I had<\/span><\/strong> two hot water tanks go out in the same building on the same day,\u00a0 a Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Four guys can carry in a 92-gallon commercial hot water tank .\u00a0 And I can pay $5,400 for their fun.<\/p>\n

No plumbers were around.\u00a0 They were all preparing their boats for Lake Erie weekend-cruising.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I reached<\/strong><\/span> Stack Heating.\u00a0\u00a0 Stack said he didn\u2019t do commercial hot-water tanks.\u00a0 Just boilers. I reached Royal Flush.\u00a0 They said they couldn\u2019t get it until Tuesday.\u00a0 Dale at Madison Plumbing could do it Monday.\u00a0 Pompeii said never. B & B Hot Water Tank said no thanks.<\/p>\n

I started flipping through the Yellow Pages.\u00a0 That is the end of the world.<\/p>\n

I braced myself for calls, like “Mr. Landlord,\u00a0 there is no hot water.\u00a0 How am I supposed to go to work without showering? ” . . . “I have to stay at my parents’ house and it’s 60 miles from work . . . \u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not<\/strong><\/span> pleasant, these scenes.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0 got Bill the plumber.\u00a0 He came by and blow-torched the old tanks to dry them.\u00a0 (The tanks had flooded because a sump pump had failed.)\u00a0\u00a0 The plumber gave the first tank a 50-50 chance of recovery.\u00a0 The second tank had 40 percent chance, he said.\u00a0 I liked his odds.<\/p>\n

The first tank went on after six hours of pampering. We were good.<\/p>\n

Still, it<\/strong><\/span> was no picnic.<\/p>\n

\u00a0. . . Dear Landlord,\u00a0 I have\u00a0 deducted $275 from my rent payment because I\u00a0 stayed in a hotel for three days due to the lack of hot water.<\/em><\/p>\n

Didn’t happen!<\/p>\n

In honor of the mildest summer ever . . .<\/small><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

WICKIN’ COOL<\/strong><\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

I threw out<\/span><\/strong> my dad\u2019s wife-beater T-shirts. About time. My father died 27 years ago. The wife-beaters were balled up in my dresser drawer.<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s 90-plus degrees — which it isn’t often this summer — I think \u201cwife-beaters.\u201d I used to wear my dad\u2019s wife-beaters around the house.<\/p>\n

My wife bought me a wicking T-shirt with UV protection at Target. Only $11. It was cooler than the wife-beater.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I saved one of my father\u2019s T-shirts for posterity and threw the rest out.<\/p>\n

Underwear fashion <\/strong><\/span>is generational. My grown sons aren\u2019t interested in my wife-beaters. My dad wore his wife-beaters under dress shirts for work, for his day job at the key company.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to buy a couple more ultra-light wicking T-shirts.<\/p>\n

No doubt, my sons will pitch my ultra-lights when I\u2019m either dead or not looking. By 2025, T-shirts will be spray-on from a can.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I\u2019m wickin\u2019 cool.<\/p>\n
