Yiddishe Cup<\/strong><\/span> was nominated for the “best ethnic\/world band.”\u00a0 We were practically the only non-Afro\/ non-reggae\/ non-Caribbean\/ non-Zydeco band in the contest.<\/p>\n

With one email blast to our fan base, Yiddishe Cup would have won the Cleveland Music Award.<\/p>\n

Sorry. Not our scene, Scene<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Cleveland Scene<\/em> magazine sponsored the contest.)\u00a0 We did not want to email blast our Yiddishe Cup fans. We didn\u2019t want to disturb world Jewry.<\/p>\n

I think the judges — Scene<\/em> editors — designed the ballot so we would win.\u00a0 Their theory:\u00a0 Young voters would spread their votes among the Afro bands, and Yiddishe Cup would pick up the rock-solid Jewish block.<\/p>\n

Do you<\/strong><\/span> think the other bands held back on email blasts?\u00a0 No! They sent out hundreds of emails: \u201cVote for us!” . . . “Make us number one!” . . . “We\u2019re number one!\u201d<\/p>\n

Pathetic.<\/p>\n

The winner was Mifune, an Afrobeat hip-hop band.\u00a0\u00a0 Mifune — you can\u2019t even pronounce that.\u00a0 At least you can pronounce Yiddishe Cup (if you’re Jewish).<\/p>\n

The most-recent<\/strong><\/span> music <\/strong>awards <\/span>contest was in 2010.\u00a0 Nothing since.*<\/em><\/p>\n

Scene<\/em>, please reboot. Yiddishe Cup wants to be number one.\u00a0 We’re ready to rock and e-blast now. \u00a0 Free Cleveland coconut bars to everybody who votes for Yiddishe Cup!<\/p>\n

CENTIPEDE LANDLORD<\/big><\/big><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was the<\/strong><\/span> landlord in a panel discussion, sponsored by the Cleveland Tenants Organization and the Center for Families and Children<\/p>\n

I wore a sports coat and polo shirt.\u00a0 I looked good.<\/p>\n

One problem: there was no audience, to speak of (to). Only two people. \u00a0One had an apartment full of centipedes.\u00a0 She had put her money in escrow for several months, and the landlord hadn\u2019t gotten rid of the centipedes.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t mind a bug or two, but I don\u2019t like them crawling on my ceiling, and me, when I\u2019m sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also<\/strong><\/span> said there were grain moths when she moved in. She said the city inspector came out and said, \u201cWhere do you shop?\u201d Which she considered a veiled racial remark.\u00a0 \u201cLike he thought I shopped in the ghetto.\u00a0 I shop where everybody else shops!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman’s landlord should have gotten rid of the centipedes. I would have liked to have heard from the landlord.<\/p>\n

The other person at the presentation had been booted out of her apartment. Her common-law husband had kicked her out.\u00a0 She had two kids and lived on $400\/month.<\/p>\n

Mr. Polo<\/strong><\/span> Shirt \u2013 me — had nothing to say.\u00a0 Come move in with me? \u00a0Nope.<\/p>\n

Lead paint. That\u2019s boring. The meeting ended on that note.<\/p>\n
