Beth El–the Heights<\/strong><\/span> Synagogue is the cool shul<\/em> in Cleveland.\u00a0 Beth El recently held a jazz jam night.<\/p>\n

Bud Sullivan blew tenor sax in the shul<\/em> basement.\u00a0 I almost didn\u2019t unpack my clarinet when I heard Bud’s quality licks.\u00a0 I eventually played along to “I Got Rhythm” and read a blog piece.<\/p>\n

The rules for the next jazz night at Beth El: no prose or poetry.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think it was me.\u00a0\u00a0 A poet read a five-minute screed about Nazi death camps. \u00a0 I — and probably others\u00a0 — hit the scotch schnapps hard after that guy.\u00a0 A comedian followed with Jewish jokes — straight from the Internet — for another five minutes.\u00a0 Deadly.<\/p>\n

\"\"I’m a<\/strong><\/span> member of Park Synagogue, a block from Beth El.\u00a0 Park Synagogue <\/em>is to Beth El<\/em>\u00a0 <\/em> as U. of Michigan<\/em> is to Oberlin.\u00a0<\/em> Beth El is crunchy, cool; Park\u00a0is the \u201cbig tent\u201d champion <\/em>— filled with thousands of hot, cold and in-between\u00a0Jews.\u00a0 (I like both shuls<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

At Park Synagogue, I once brought in an Orthodox-style rapper for Purim.\u00a0 The rapper was half Orthodox\/half reggae-man.\u00a0 The congregants nearly plotzed<\/em>: a rap-a-holic in peyes<\/em> and all- black.<\/p>\n

This Purim<\/strong><\/span> <\/strong>Yiddishe Cup collaborates with a soul singer.\u00a0 Her name is Tamar.\u00a0 Perfect.<\/p>\n
