Merjeme Haxhiraj,<\/strong><\/span> a tenant, tried to get her rent reduced. She wrote, \u201cMr. Albert, I wish you will only rise the rent to $470\/month.\u00a0 I think you will fulfill my wish.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wrote this letter annually (changing only the dollar figure).\u00a0 I knocked her rent down to $490 from $500 the last time.<\/p>\n

Ms. Haxhiraj was Albanian, worked in a nursing home, and had cancer.<\/p>\n

After 10<\/strong><\/span> years, she said she was moving.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t figure out where to.\u00a0 New York? Albania?\u00a0\u00a0 Some place where I couldn\u2019t find her, I bet.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t want to pay the final month\u2019s rent. \u00a0She wrote, \u201cI am leaving country and will not have forwarding address. Please keep the security deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wait a minute, Ms. Haxhiraj, the tenant has to pay the final month\u2019s rent! I knocked on her door and said, \u201cWe need the final month\u2019s rent, Ms. Haxhiraj. That\u2019s the rule.\u201d\u00a0 (I said Hacks-er-aj<\/em>.\u00a0 Totally wrong no doubt. Loved the x<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI am<\/strong><\/span> old woman.\u00a0 I no work for three years.\u201d\u00a0 And don\u2019t forget the cancer.<\/p>\n

I walked through her apartment.\u00a0 \u201cOK, but don\u2019t leave anything,\u201d I said. \u201cTake everything.\u201d I pointed to the hangers in the closet. \u201cEven the hangers.”<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything go,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot that it matters, but are you Christian or Muslim?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

I was curious.\u00a0 That\u2019s all. \u00a0I try to make my job as interesting as possible.<\/p>\n

When Ms. Haxhiraj moved, she left a bed, five chairs, a sofa, handbags, four bags of garbage, many oranges, several chocolate bars and a lot of hangers.\u00a0 No gym bag.\u00a0 I needed a gym bag.<\/p>\n
