Walking is a major part of my religion.<\/p>\n<p>Last week my wife, Alice, and I walked home from Rosh Hashanah services. We were at Altamont and Compton roads, in a mostly black section of Cleveland Heights &#8212; close to a mostly Orthodox neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Three black boys pulled up on bikes. I like to wear a yarmulke in public once in a while, just to \u201cout\u201d myself.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Shawn, leaning on his handlebars, said, \u201cYou Jewish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>He turned<\/strong><\/span> to Alice. \u201c<em>You<\/em> Jewish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Total<\/em> Jewish?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>\u201cYes,\u201d my<\/strong><\/span> wife said, smiling. She knew D\u2019Shawn. Alice teaches gym in the local public school and knows a lot of kids. \u201cBeing Jewish is a good thing. The food is good . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>\u201cYou go to that building [synagogue] up on Taylor?\u201d D&#8217;Shawn asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, we go to the big temple &#8212; the one with the dome &#8212; over there,\u201d Alice said, pointing toward Euclid Heights Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>Alice wears slacks. She doesn&#8217;t wear a wig. She doesn&#8217;t look Orthodox. (She isn&#8217;t &#8212; not by a long shot.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou breaking Armish?\u201d D\u2019Shawn said.<\/p>\n<p>I said, &#8220;Breaking <em>Armish<\/em>? Did you say \u2018breaking Armish\u2019? What\u2019s that mean? He told me, \u201cEverything I ever did began with a B &#8212; baker, banker and builder. In the 1960s, Israel came to us for brewing tips and equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marvin said there were only four other Cleveland breweries in the 1950s: Carling&#8217;s from Canada (\u201cvery nice people\u201d); Standard Brewing; Erin Brew, Irish; Leisy\u2019s, German; and Pilsener\u2019s P.O.C., Czech.\u00a0 Bilsky\u2019s brewery bottled Gold Bond beer and Olde Timers Ale.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>\u201cWe all<\/strong><\/span> used to meet on Mondays.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have any trouble with anybody,\u201d Marvin said.<\/p>\n<p>The last local brewery in town was Carling, which closed in 1984. Carling Black Label beer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Bilsky\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> brewery was just a blip in the Bilsky biz history.\u00a0 <em>The<\/em> Bilsky business was Bilsky\u2019s Bakery, which had started on Kinsman and moved to Cedar Center in 1948.<\/p>\n<p>Who invented the Cleveland coconut bar?<\/p>\n<p>That was the question I should have asked Marvin.\u00a0\u00a0 My dad had loved coconut bars (and halvah).\u00a0 I should have asked.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11346\" title=\"cocot nut bars Davis Baker\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/cocot-nut-bars-Davis-Baker1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"54\" \/><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Marvin was<\/strong><\/span> in the phone book . . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarvin, this is Bert Stratton from Yiddishe Cup, the klezmer band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for the concert yesterday. [Australians call them lamingtons, says Google.]\u00a0 Where did they get them?\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe from England.\u00a0\u00a0 Australia used to be part of England.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>\u201cMarvin, I<\/strong><\/span> have a friend, my age &#8212; his grandfather was Kritzer\u2019s Bakery on Kinsman &#8212;\u00a0 my friend says his grandfather invented the coconut bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was <em>my <\/em>father!\u201d Marvin said, laughing.\u00a0 \u201cWho knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called my cousin George Becker, whose father had owned Heights Baking on Coventry.\u00a0 George said his father <em>didn\u2019t <\/em>invented the coconut bar.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Yippee, one<\/strong><\/span> less Coconut Bar King to contend with.<\/p>\n<p>Former Clevelander Scott Raab wrote in<em> Esquire <\/em>(July 2002): \u201cAsk for coconut bars in any Jewish bakery from New Jersey to Los Angeles and you&#8217;ll get some version of this: \u2018So, you&#8217;re from Cleveland . . .
