About half<\/strong><\/span> the people I meet in Cleveland are graduates of Shaker Heights or Cleveland Heights High.\u00a0 (I live in Cleveland Heights.)<\/p>\n

The others are often out-of-towners.\u00a0 (\u201cOut of towner\u201d is anybody who moved to Cleveland within the last 30 years.)<\/p>\n

I occasionally run into St. Ignatius and West Side grads too, but that’s not this story.<\/p>\n

Cleveland Heights High grads like to reminisce about the Cedar-Lee neighborhood. Their nostalgia nexus is the Cedar Lee Theatre and what used to be around there . . . Mawby\u2019s, Meyer Miller shoe store,\u00a0 Earth by April.<\/p>\n

One Heights<\/strong><\/span> guy told me he learned almost everything in life by selling shoes at Meyer Miller as a teenager.<\/p>\n

Meyer Miller\u2019s co-owner was Cuppy Cohen.<\/p>\n

The pool hall below the Cedar Lee Theatre was Wally\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Who cares?\u00a0 Heights people do.<\/p>\n

Sid Abrams,<\/strong><\/span> a deceased freelance writer<\/em>, wrote about Coney Island for the Cleveland Jewish News<\/em>.\u00a0 He and the<\/em> editor grew up near Coney Island.\u00a0 Two people read the Coney Island stories in the Cleveland<\/em> Jewish News<\/em>.\u00a0 Sid and the editor.<\/p>\n

My nostalgia vortex is Mayfield Road, South Euclid.\u00a0 Mayfield Road was Italians plus a couple Jews, like me. \u00a0 My elementary school was on Mayfield, as was my high school, Brush. \u00a0 On my way home from elementary school, I would buy Italian bread at Alesci\u2019s and hollow out the insides.\u00a0 My mother would say, \u201cWhere\u2019s the bread?\u201d as I handed her the crust.<\/p>\n

West of Alesci\u2019s was the Cream-O-Freeze; to the east, the Norge Village Laundromat.\u00a0 It took a village . . . Jay Drugstore, for baseball cards; Lawson’s, for Hostess cupcakes;\u00a0 Society for Savings, for uncirculated pennies.<\/p>\n

Excuse me,<\/strong><\/span> I have to check the Sohio Jackpot winners list.<\/p>\n
