There’s no money in the arts.<\/strong><\/span> My old clarinet teacher told me that.\u00a0 He used to eat salami sandwiches while I took lessons.\u00a0 That stunk.\u00a0 Mr. Golub.<\/p>\n He bought a building across from his music store; named the building after his daughter, The Joyce Manor; and sold it years later.\u00a0 He said he regretted he didn’t move with his brother to D.C. and make an even bigger killing there in a real boom town.<\/p>\n Golub’s Music Center.\u00a0 He had a neon saxophone on the sign.\u00a0 That, alone, drew the customers.\u00a0 Inside, there were bongos and guitars.<\/p>\n Mr. Golub couldn’t play by ear.<\/strong><\/span> That mystified him.<\/p>\n Mystifies me \u2014 playing by ear<\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> But I can do it \u2014\u00a0 somewhat.<\/p>\n I’m the klezmer guy.\u00a0 I go to shivas<\/em> (funeral wakes) and tell the mourners that, and, yeah, they recognize me. They say, “Oh, you’re the klezmer guy.”<\/p>\n Everybody needs to be some kind of\u00a0 “guy”<\/span> (or “gal”).\u00a0 Cable guy.\u00a0 Computer guy.\u00a0 Pool guy.\u00a0 I became the klezmer guy because I put together the longest-lasting Jewish band between Chicago and D.C.\u00a0 Yiddishe Cup.<\/p>\n No mega money in this <\/strong><\/span>but it keeps me from going nuts.<\/p>\n My day job is real estate.\u00a0 I’m a landlord.\u00a0 I own and manage apartment buildings.\u00a0 People call me up about low-water pressure, mice, clanging radiators.\u00a0 I generally don’t fix the stuff; I usually hire repairmen.\u00a0 My father used to say, “I didn’t send you to college to paint walls.”\u00a0 Well, I painted a few walls anyway and pointed some bricks,\u00a0 but that’s not my calling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There’s no money in the arts.
