DARBY CREEK<\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">south of Columbus, Ohio<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My wife, Alice, and I hit a tree stump in Darby Creek, and I flipped our canoe.\u00a0 I\u00a0 became entangled in branches and logs.\u00a0 The current felt like nine bathtubs pouring over me at once.\u00a0 Alice perched herself on a log in the creek, trying to save her iPod.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10094\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/canoe.-tipacanoe-and-bert-too..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10094\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10094 \" title=\"canoe.  tipacanoe and bert too.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/canoe.-tipacanoe-and-bert-too.-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/canoe.-tipacanoe-and-bert-too.-300x174.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/canoe.-tipacanoe-and-bert-too..jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tippecanoe and Bert too<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The canoe ride was billed as a languid 12-mile paddle downstream with no white water.\u00a0 But we canoed right after a major storm and a wet spring (last year).\u00a0 I was rescued by two kayakers, who found my paddle and extricated my leg. \u00a0The canoeing outfitter did not want to talk about my adventure.\u00a0 He was having a slow season and didn\u2019t want anybody to overhear us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>During my<\/strong><\/span> flip, I kept repeating, \u201cDo not panic.\u201d\u00a0 But I panicked some.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is a very narrow bridge, and the important thing is to not be afraid.\u201d\u00a0 &#8212; Rabbi Nachman. \u00a0\u00a0Be afraid, but not longer than, say, a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Alice\u2019s iPod made it.\u00a0 My cell phone died.\u00a0 Mother Nature made it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>2. THE SOUTH<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t go to Waffle House that often.\u00a0 The closest Waffle House is in Medina, Ohio, and that\u2019s the South.<\/p>\n<p>What are grits?\u00a0 Cream of wheat? What are you supposed to do with grits?\u00a0 Pour syrup on them?<\/p>\n<p>At Waffle House I order hash browns with onions.\u00a0 That\u2019s called \u201cscattered and smothered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10131\" title=\"huddle house\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/huddle-house.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"54\" \/>My son<\/strong><\/span> Teddy suggested I try Huddle House.\u00a0 I went to one in South Carolina on vacation.\u00a0 Pretty much the same as Waffle House.\u00a0 (I can&#8217;t go to Waffle House &#8212; or Huddle House &#8212; with my band, because two guys in Yiddishe Cup don&#8217;t like &#8220;Awful House.&#8221;\u00a0 They like baked potatoes at Wendy&#8217;s.)<\/p>\n<p>My wife bought a two-pound bag of stone-ground grits at a gift shop in Charleston, South Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0 The label read, \u201cFood for the Southern Soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s true, the South is in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>3. SHAKER HEIGHTS, OHIO<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sports teams at Shaker Heights High are called the Red Raiders.\u00a0 Why aren\u2019t they the Shakers?\u00a0 It would be class, similar to the University of Pennsylvania Quakers.<\/p>\n<p>There are three real Shakers in Maine. That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Would these elderly women be offended if Shaker&#8217;s teams became the Shakers?\u00a0 I doubt it.<\/p>\n<p>Red Raiders.\u00a0 What does that mean?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10126\" title=\"red raider\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yiddishecup.com\/blog\/home\/yiddis6\/public_html\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/red-raider.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"149\" \/>Shaker &#8212;<\/strong><\/span> the religion &#8212; is the United Society of Believers in Christ\u2019s Second Appearing.\u00a0 Shaker central in Cleveland was the intersection of Coventry Road and North Park Boulevard.\u00a0 The Shakers had a grist mill there.\u00a0 They had buildings &#8212; dairies, farms, woodshops, who knows.<\/p>\n<p>I live nine houses from Shaker, in Cleveland Heights.\u00a0 I have a friend who lives in Shaker <em>and<\/em> Cleveland Heights.\u00a0 Her living room is in Cleveland Heights and her bedroom is in Shaker.\u00a0 Her house straddles the border.\u00a0 I wonder how this affects her outlook.\u00a0 She moved to the Heights from the West Coast and may not yet understand what \u201cShaker\u201d connotes locally.\u00a0 Harvey Pekar always played down his Shaker High diploma.\u00a0 Reduced his street cred.<\/p>\n<p>Go Shakers.\u00a0 Classy name.\u00a0 Lower Ivy League cachet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Yiddishe Cup plays 7:30 p.m. Thurs., July 5,\u00a0 on the lawn at Wiley Middle School, 2181 Miramar Blvd., University Heights, Ohio.\u00a0 (Indoors if raining.) Free.\u00a0 It&#8217;s &#8220;Family Fun Night&#8221; with games and free ice cream one-half hour before the show.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8212;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Next week&#8217;s blog post will go up Tues.
